“I’m sorry, Bella. I wish there was another way.”

As I squeeze my eyes shut, reality sets in.

I really don’t have a choice.

No wonder Nico let me go.

He knew I’d return to him, on my knees, begging for a second chance as I sacrifice myself on the altar of his thirst for revenge.

CHAPTERFIFTEEN

Nico

“She’s leftthe coffee shop, boss. On her way to Fallon and Associates.”

At Sergio’s words, I nod.

Though it’s early, I’m in my downtown office. Since I only slept a couple of hours, I worked out then headed in, keeping my phone nearby.

“Calabrese’s still at the table. Do you want me to question him?”

For a moment, I consider it. “No.”

My future bride is too loyal to do anything other than the right thing.

Forcibly I shove aside an unwelcome voice deep inside that tells me that marriage is the right thing for me. But not for her.

Moments later, Roberto summons me, and I am on my way to the Braes where I remain for an hour, reassuring him that my wedding is indeed happening and that it’s not proving to be a distraction, which is essential because we are deep into the planning for the Four Corners Alliance meeting.

Seeing to the don’s safety and that of his underboss, Matteo, is our biggest priority.

After we complete our meeting and Sergio is taking me back to my office, I open the app that will show me where Bella is.

She doesn’t know that I have the ability to track her anytime, but for her safety, it’s essential.

There haven’t been outward moves against the Moretti family since that assassination attempt years ago, but now that the Russos are muscling into our territory, I will not take chances with those who belong to me. As my fiancée, she is now a target.

I’m interrupted by a call from my personal banker, which can only mean one thing. Smiling, I answer.

“You wanted to be notified of any activity on this particular account, sir.”

I did indeed. Until now, Bella hasn’t put a single thing on the credit card I’d given her.

“The Sterling Hotel Groups, sir.”

Interesting.“Any more detail?”

“Ah… Appears to be the Sterling Uptown, Mr. Moretti.”

I admire her move. Not only does she exhibit good taste, but she obviously isn’t planning to spend more time with Amelia.

“And while I have you…”

“Go on.”

“A purchase with no swipe or tap has just come through on your account. It’s for over four thousand dollars.”

Meaning the card number was typed in and wasn’t presented to the merchant. I wait for him to continue.
