Page 40 of Craving Morgan
“What do you meanwe?” Brooklyn almost sounded suspicious.“Is he there?” Her voice dropped to a whisper as if Jameson could overhear them, which was impossible given he was in another room.
“Yes,” Morgan said with a grin. She felt like a giddy school-age girl again.
“What?Oh my god, details, woman, I need details,” Brooklyn exclaimed, sounding just as happy as her.
“I don’t want to say over the phone.Jameson is getting dressed in the next room. How about we get together for lunch and we can talk about it?” There was so much she wanted to talk about, but the phone wasn’t the place.
“Oh, I can’t today.” Brooklyn’s voice fell.
“Oh…” Morgan couldn’t keep the disappointment out of her voice.“What about tomorrow?”
“Drake and I are pretty booked with all the case stuff. We actually had to go out of town again. How about you just tell me now?”
It wasn’t how she’d wanted to break the news to her, but if Brooklyn was out of town dealing with case stuff, she could be gone a while, and so she had to tell her now.She was already practically splitting at the seams.“Well, he’s been here all weekend.Ever since a man tried killing me in my parking lot.You should have seen him, Brook. He was incredible.”
“Wait, slow down and rewind.A man tried to what?” Brooklyn screeched, and it wasn’t in excitement this time but in horror.
Morgan winced, she hadn’t meant to drop that little bomb on her so casually.“Sorry, I almost forgot I haven’t talked to you in a few days.A man tried to kill me.Put a gun to my head.I wouldn’t be talking to you if it wasn’t for Jameson.”
It had been horrible and fascinating to watch him fight off her attacker. She hoped it was an experience she would never have to witness again.Fearing something happening to him standing right in front of her.
“Oh my god, Morg, I am so sorry. This is all my fault.I shouldn’t have listened to Jameson when he told us to get out of town again.”
“Jameson? But I thought you said you got called out of town for the case.” What did Jameson have to do with it?Now she was confused.
“Oh…I…that is…” Brooklyn stuttered as if she was trying to come up with a lie before sighing, knowing she couldn’t talk herself out of this.“I was never very good at keeping secrets.”
“Brooklyn, what’s going on?Why are you blaming yourself for someone attacking me?”
“Ever since Lawry was murdered in his jail cell, Jameson has been on edge.He thinks whoever my boss can implicate hired someone to clean house—his words.”
“Wait, Lawry’s dead?” Morgan didn’t think she could take any more surprises, but they just kept coming like waves in a tidal pool never letting up.
“Yeah, the beginning of last week.Shortly after we got back.Jameson hasn’t told you anything?” Brooklyn sounded shocked that Jameson could keep something like this away from her.She wasn’t, however.Jameson was a cop through and through. He would only release information that he thought essential.Obviously, he didn’t feel any of that information was necessary for her to know.
Had their reconciliation been fake so he could get close to her to keep an eye on her?Everything between them a ruse just to catch a killer?Morgan felt so used and dirty.
“Morg, you there?” Brooklyn sounded even more worried.
Morgan felt her vocal cords seize up again as her mind was awhirl with all of this new information.“I can’t believe it.” She could, but she didn’t want to.Morgan didn’t want to think Jameson was so underhanded as to use their connection as a weapon.
“I know he had reservations, but I figured he would have said something by now.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Morgan accused, feeling as if her best friend had just betrayed her.Everyone seemed to know what was going on but her.
“Jameson asked me not to.” Brooklyn’s voice was pained as if she had really wanted to tell her, but damn Jameson probably put a guilt trip on her to keep silent, and sweet Brooklyn would do anything for her.“I’m so sorry, Morg.I wanted to, but Jameson was worried if you knew what was going on, you’d resist protection and could get…” Her voice trailed off as if she didn’t want to finish the sentence.
Murdered.Just like she almost had been if Jameson hadn’t intervened. It didn’t matter his trick worked in protecting her, but it still hurt.“But Jameson has been with me since the attack. He could have told me anytime.”
When?In between love-making?Or when she was trying to push him away? She had kept accusing him of being around her as a sense of duty. He’d brushed it off, but she’d been right. He hadn’t hung around because he wanted to get back together. He had hung around because he knew she had been in danger.
“Why me?What does Lawry’s death have to do with me?” Morgan shook her head, not understanding why she was a target. She was no one.She knew nothing. Her death would mean nothing in the grand scheme of things.
“Lawry kidnapped you.”
“So Jameson thought I was a target.”
“Maybe the person in charge worried Lawry revealed something to you.”
