Kyson smiles, carefully setting it down. “True.” He takes the glass of water and drinks about half of it before setting it down too. “I can’t take it anymore. Tell me what you need to tell me. Please.”

I nod, rising to my feet to collect my thoughts for a moment. When I turn to face him, he’s watching me, but his energy is tense and fearful. I hate that.

“Take a deep breath, sweetheart. I can hear your heart racing all the way over here.”

He smiles, blowing out a breath. “Right.”

“I’ve spent the day wondering where to start. There’s so much to tell you.” I wring my hands together. “I suppose none of it will make sense without the biggest part.”

Kyson nods but remains quiet otherwise.

“I’ve mentioned that I am sensitive to energy around me. When I burst into Neal’s office it was because your emotions were so strong I felt them from across the street.”

“You’re… an empath? An intuitive?”

“No.” I need to break this down simpler. “Okay. Let’s start with my… abilities. I have several, but the big ones are being able to read energy and thoughts and being able to manipulate them.”

“Manipulate them? Like, mind control?”

“You could call it that. Others call it compulsion. Thrall. Influence. I can make people think and feel what I want them to.”

His face goes blank for a second, then his cheeks turn pink. “Have you been doing that to make me like you?”

“No, sweetheart. I have never used it on you, and I only would if you were in danger.”

“What about that stuff you gave me to drink?”

“Nope. It was just as I explained. It brought out yourtruest feelings and desires, and I am so thankful, because it opened my eyes to what was happening between us.” I sit in the armchair across from him. “That’s why I took off while you slept. I needed air and…” I smile. “Honestly, I panicked. I’ve never felt about anyone the way I feel about you. It took a few hours and a chat with Yves for me to figure out why.”

“Why?”

“Because we were made for each other, Kyson. Cosmically made. Destined for this.”

Several emotions flash across his face as he works it out. “This isn’t like ‘I’m a Leo and you’re an Aries’ kind of thing, is it?”

I chuckle. “No. It’s real and deeper than your mortal mind can understand, but I’ll help.”

“Mortal mind?” He laughs, but it’s nervous. “You’re saying a lot of weird things right now.”

“I am, yes.” I rub my forehead. “Okay, you understand the concept of soulmates, yes?”

“Yes.”

“Well, we are that, only more so. Intensified.” I rise and move to sit next to him. “We’refatedmates, Kyson. We were always meant to find each other. I didn’t think fate intended to show me such kindness, but I can no longer deny the way I feel with you. So your fears that I’m not real or this isn’t real or it’s temporary are so wrong. Not only are we not temporary, we are eternal. We are evermore.”

Kyson’s brow furrows as his mouth opens as if he intends to speak but instead he snaps it shut again.

“Let me continue,” I offer. He nods in reply. I clear my throat. “You see, darling, I am not an ordinary man. I’m like no other you have ever met. I know you’re confused and you’re wondering if I’m insane, but I assure you, I’m not.” Taking his hands into mine, I search his eyes. “Those abilities I told you about, the reason I know we’re fated is because of what I am.”

“And that is?” he asks, his voice trembling.

“Well, darling, there’s only way to say and that is simply. I’m a vampire.”
