It was thick with forest, and far from the pack, but not close to hunters. She had learned that hunters didn’t like certain parts of the woods or forests and often created tales of hauntings to keep people away.
She loved this patch because even though it was thick with trees and bushes, she could still look at the full moon. She loved the feel of it against her naked skin.
Her clothes were tucked away behind a fallen branch that was slowly rotting back into earth, completing the perfect cycle.
She closed her eyes, and then she heard him.
Darcy had told him to meet her. She had offered him directions, but Joe had promised he’d find her. He’d be able to follow her scent. She did have her doubts, but there he was, his arms around her.
“I’ve got you,” he said.
She put her hands over him, holding onto him. “And I’ve got you.”
“Always?” he asked.
“Yes, always.”
He pressed his face against her neck, breathing her in. “You smell so good.”
She closed her eyes. This felt amazing. Her mate at her back, and the full moon shining down on her skin.
Her wolf stretched against her skin, and she knew what she wanted. It was time. Her wolf had been caged for far too long, and she wanted to run.
Stepping away from Joe, she turned to look at him.
“Are you ready?” she asked.
Darcy didn’t give him time to answer as she gave her body over to the wolf. There was no pain, no fear. She had learned to accept this part of herself, and her reward was no pain. Never any pain.
Staring at Joe, she saw that he was still in human form.
“Amazing,” he said.
Seconds later, he joined her, and then their wolves were finally together.
“Can you hear me?” Joe asked.
Darcy stared at him in amazement.
She had heard of mates being able to communicate in wolf form, but she had never experienced it. She’d been able to hear William, but as he was the alpha, he had the ability to connect with all the wolves of the pack. Even when he wasn’t close, he could still reach out to the pack. She knew it was to help with protection.
“Yes,” she said.
Their wolves rubbed against each other, and she felt it.
“You feel so good, Darcy.”
“So do you.” This did feel so good.
She felt so connected to him.
“Let’s run,” Joe said.
Darcy didn’t need to be asked twice. Matching him stride for stride, she took off, running, keeping up with him as they made their way through the forest. Their wolves in synch, knowing where they wanted to go. In her mind, she felt Joe.
She didn’t know how long they ran for, but it felt so good, so free, and so wonderful. Darcy had spent so many full moons alone, she hadn’t even realized what she was missing.
The hours ticked by, and then, together they played, nipping at each other, and toward midnight, as they tumbled together, Darcy let her wolf go. At the same time, Joe did the same, and they landed on the earth, naked and kissing.
