But, heisright, so I awkwardly and painfully, change the subject. “Did you track down the Laurel Cove bank the witches redirected our missing money to?”

I still can’t get over how fucking ballsy it was of them. Stealing from the Lords of Blackwood to pay for information about Jade, a supe under our protection? Madness.

But if it had worked...

If Vrahs didn’t have a mate link with Jade, if he hadn’t been able to track her down, the witches would have gotten away with it.

Fucking witches.

“I did.” Ryker steps closer. “And I put a call into said bank. Once I introduced myself, they were all too happy to tell me where the money went after it entered that account.”

“And?” I ask, rising from the bed.

“The abjured wolf, Noah something-or-other, living here for the past several months.”

“Red-handed, huh?”

Ryker takes another step toward me, and I pretend like I don’t notice.

But I also don’t back away.

“Exactly,” he agrees. “I had the bank stop payment on that transfer. We should have all our missing money back in three to five business days.”

“Excellent work, Ryker.”

He leans in to the compliment. There’s mere inches between us.

“And you were worried you’d lost your touch with spreadsheets,” I whisper.

“Knowing where to look made things significantly easier. Without the Laurel Cove clue, it was like searching for a needle in a haystack of needles,” he says just as quietly.

I chuckle. “I don’t think that’s how the saying works, friend.”

“Well, it is now,” he says, his eyes black with desire and his hardening cock pressing against my leg.

This time, I’m the one who balks. At the most inopportune moment.

Just as Ryker reaches for me, I reject him. “I think you were right. We should wait until Jade—”

His face goes cold, stoic, hand falling to his side. “Fine. You’re right.”

I try to touch his face, to tell him thathe’sthe one who’s right, but he turns away and leaves the room.

Fuck.

I really need to work on letting a guy down better.

VRAHS

As I makeour murdering coroner as comfortable as one can be in a light tight dungeon, I can’t help the buzzing thoughts in the back of my mind.

I’m incredibly honored and proud to have Jade as a mate. Awed by her actions, by her restraint. I’m obsessed with her, in lustful, wicked love with her mind, her heart, and her human and demoness forms.

But I will tell her none of it. She has no room for it.

Not with the blow she was just dealt.

And as sorry as I am to see her suffering and conflicted, I have no doubt Jade will find her way through this terrible, thorny path.
