It was a good plan. “I’m going with you.”

His eyes met mine. There was something calculating in his gaze, but he must’ve read the determination in mine because he nodded. “Alright.”

I grinned and kissed him. Hopping off his lap, I started for the door. “Oh,” I said, turning back to him. “I’m going to take one of your cars and go get the rest of my stuff from my apartment and break the lease. Then, I have a few other errands I want to run today.”

“It’s already done,” Nico absentmindedly told me.

“What?”

The tone of my voice had him focusing on me. “I terminated your lease the night you agreed to be mine. My men got your things and brought them here.”

“Then, where are they?” I asked, my eyes narrowed on his face.

“I’ll check with Pietro. He was supposed to inform you.”

“He didn’t,” I gritted out between my teeth.

Nico cocked his head. “You’re angry.”

No shit.“Yes, I’m angry, Nico.”

“Why?”

He didn’t get it and I’m not sure he would if I explained it to him, so I just shot him a glare and left the room. I heard him mutter a few curses as the door slammed and the phone started ringing in unison.

Stalking up to our room, I grabbed a sweatshirt, my phone, wallet, and snagged the set of keys that were on his nightstand. Originally, I’d been planning on going back to bed and then heading into the city at a more reasonable time. There was no way I could sleep now, though. I walked down the stairs and out the door, thankful that no one stopped me.

I went to the detached garage—it was almost as big as the damn house—and started clicking the fob until a set of lights flashed. I eyed the Maserati and considered going back inside and tracking down a new set of keys.

Fuck it.I didn’t want to waste the time and now I really wanted to drive this car. The tires spun out on the gravel drive as I gave the car more gas than I should have. I whooped and laughed as it fishtailed and I used the steering wheel to correct the car.

Once I hit the freeway I really opened her up. I understood why people bought these things now. She was fast and she was smooth. I was having so much fun I wasn’t paying attention. As soon as I flew past the cop car, I groaned. Glancing down at the odometer, I saw I was going over one hundred miles per hour. It was early enough that there wasn’t as much traffic out and that’d been my downfall.

Sure enough, reds and blues flashed in my mirror as the cop got in behind me. I merged over into the right lane, expecting to get pulled over. Shock filled me, when the lights stopped abruptly and the police cruiser slowed way down and parked under a bridge.

“He ran my plates and they came back under Nico’s name,” I muttered to myself. Shaking my head, I wondered how one man had control over so much?

I watched my speed the rest of the way into the city. Parking out in front of my apartment building I got out of the car. I wasn’t sure what I was doing here since Nico already terminated my lease, but I was restless and angry. It was my right to put an end to that part of my life and he’d just stepped in and taken over. He did that a lot, I was finding out.

Jogging up the stairs, I stopped in front of Dante’s door. I knocked and waited. When he didn’t answer the door I figured he wasn’t home from work yet. Sighing, I went back downstairs. My feet paused on the last step when I saw Paolo loitering in the entrance of the building.

He glanced up and gave me a quick smile. We met in the middle.

“Are you following me?”

“Of course,” he said with a straight face.

I laughed. “Why?”

“Boss told me to. He would’ve come himself but he had a conference with the mayor.”

My brows shot up. “The New York City Mayor?” He nodded. “I always knew that guy was a shady motherfucker.”

It was Paolo’s turn to laugh. “You and the rest of New York,” he agreed.

We walked outside and Paolo kept pace with me. I didn’t know where I was going, I just needed to move.

“What happened?”
