When it ended, I would deal with it then.

We got into the car and as we drove away, tension came over me. What if he dropped me off at my apartment and said goodbye? Did I have the guts to ask him in for a drink? Then I remembered that I did not have a drink in my apartment. I inwardly cursed myself. I couldn’t offer him dinner either as we’d already eaten. I should have planned it better. I didn’t want the night to end just yet.

My problem was solved a few minutes later.

“Want to come to my place for a drink?” Max said. “It would be a shame to end the evening so early.”

It was before ten o’clock, hardly so early, but we both needed an excuse. “I’d love that.”

We got to his gate and at the press of a button in his car, the gates slid open. My heart thumped wildly in my chest and the need between my legs intensified. I pressed my legs together but that didn’t help one bit.

Max parked the car.

“I remember the last time I was here,” I said as I got out.

“I can’t forget it,” he said, offering his hand to me.

I took it and sparks flew between us. His eyes flashed and I was sure he’d felt it too. The physical attraction between us was so hot, it could have lit a fire.

Max pushed the door open and his dogs ran to him excitedly, their short tails wagging. How different they were the last time I saw them, snarling so ferociously they were salivating.

He scratched their heads. “This is Tomo and Tyson. Want to say hello?”

I held back. “If they promise not to bite my hand off.”

He turned his face towards me. “They are highly trained and incredibly loyal. They’d bite their own paws off before they bite the hand of a friend of mine.”

I moved forward and offered the back of my hand for them to sniff. When they had sniffed it, I knelt and rubbed their shiny necks. They eyed me curiously, but neutrally. No hostility and no affection. “They’re stunning dogs.”

“Yes, that they are. Stunning.”

“I could do with a shower,” Max said, his eyes boring into mine. “Feel like one?”

I was dying to say yes. “I don’t have fresh clothes to change into.”

“You can wear one of my shirts until Dana brings you some stuff.”

I rose to my feet. “Dana?”

“My personal shopper. I think I told you about her. She has excellent taste.”

“But at this time of the night?”

“That should be no problem for her. She has access to clothing shops at all hours of the day. Part of the service.” He scrolled through his phone, tapped the screen, and put it to his ear. “Dana, are you able to bring some women’s clothes over? I’ll also require a sports bra, a tracksuit, and running shoes as well.” He paused to listen to her reply. Then held out his phone to me. “Give her your sizes and color preferences.”

I took the phone from him and gave Dana, who was very friendly, my measurements, then I ended the call and gave the phone back to him.

I looked sideways at him. “Why do I need a sports bra and running shoes?”

“We’re going running at dawn.”

I smiled at the wonderful thought of running in the early morning with him. “Okay.”

I followed him up the stairs, both dogs keeping up with us.

“Stay,” Max instructed, giving each dog a treat. Both dogs immediately sat down and began to eat their little morsels with surprising delicacy. He shut his bedroom door and his eyes moved over my body.

My nipples pushed against the material of my dress, aching to be touched. I knew that he could see them.
