She sighed. “Because they’re spicy and upset your tummy.”

Jacob shrugged. “I like them.”

“Does he really get an upset stomach from those? Because I can get another pizza.” Fuck. I brought variety since I didn’t know what they preferred on their pies.

“We usually keep it simple. Jakey loves cheese pizza, but he likes pepperoni and sausage, too. I’m the one that eats all the veggies,” she laughed. “Don’t you dare throw this out either. Eat it. There’s plenty of food.”

“Alright,” I agreed.

“And, yes, sometimes spicy food disagrees with him, and we try to avoid that.”

“Noted,” I replied, ruffling Jacob’s hair. “I’ll bring him his own cheese pizza next time.”

“Yes!” Jacob shouted.

Rowen’s lips twitched with amusement.

Generally, I wouldn’t use a plate and just eat from the box, but I tried to act like I had manners and placed my food on one of the paper plates. Jacob dragged his chair closer to mine andswung his little legs as he ate, talking with his mouth full when Rowen gave him a look.

He swallowed and launched into a conversation about the Avengers as I managed to take bites between his questions.

“Jacob Casey,” Rowen exclaimed with a shake of her head. “Let the man eat.”

I chuckled at his expression and finished my food before pulling out the ice cream and twisting the cap off the 2 liter of root beer. “There’s a trick to getting the floats just right,” I announced to Jacob. “Wanna help?”

He seemed fascinated by the process and helped scoop vanilla goodness into the glasses.

“Now, we need to pour the root beer slowly because it will foam. Okay? That 2 liter is heavy, so I’m gonna hold the end for you.”

“I get to pour all by myself?” He seemed shocked and thrilled.

Rowen made a face. “Sure.”

Jacob did good. He only spilled a few drops on the table. His eyes brightened with excitement when he finished filling the third glass. I set the root beer to the side and twisted the cap on.

“Try it out. Tell me what you think.”

Rowen handed him a spoon from the box of plasticware I brought with me. That was another good call on my part. The house wasn’t stocked yet because she hadn’t had a chance to use the gift cards we’d given her. She needed to go shopping, and I decided I’d help with that, too, since she didn’t know where everything was located yet. Acclimating to a new town took a little time. I didn’t have a problem showing her around.

“Mammoth!” Jacob shouted. “This is awesome!”

“I’m glad you think so, Little Man. It’s my favorite dessert.”

“It’s the bestest with pizza,” he agreed, shoving ice cream in his mouth.

“Slow down, baby,” Rowen laughed, “before you get a brain freeze.”

Jacob paused, swallowing before turning to me. “Is that true? Can your brain freeze?”

“Jakey,” Rowen admonished.

“Well? Can it?”

It took everything I had not to laugh. “Well,” I began, stroking my beard, “I suppose you can freeze it for a couple of seconds, but it won’t last long.”

“See?” Jacob grinned with triumph. “I won’t have much of a brain freeze, Mama.”

She snorted.
