“I’m not leaving you here alone to deal with this.” She gave me a pointed look, expecting me to drop it.

That wouldn’t be happening.

“I’m not changing my mind. Go. I’ll make sure nothing too important was damaged.”

CHAPTER TWELVE

HALEY

“Thank you,”I mumbled as I hung up the phone and continued pacing my driveway. I swear water sponged out of my shoes every step I took.

“What did they say?” Asher asked, joining me.

I dropped my head back and looked up at the sky, blinking away tears. I wasn’t a crier, at least not in front of people. I was usually the bad bitch that joked and made others laugh. I only cried when I was super fucking pissed or upset, and usually it was in the shower. I’d grab a glass of wine, drink it the shower, and just cry.

It was cathartic. Everyone should try it.

I met Asher’s eyes, and he pulled me into his arms. My face going into the crook of his neck as I let out a shuddered breath. “Hey. It’s going to be okay.”

“My house is a damn pool.” His hard chest muffled my words.

Asher tightened one arm around my waist while his other hand ran up and down my back soothingly. I’d hugged Asher many times, but this felt different. This was how you would comfort your spouse when everything went to shit.I guess it had.“It’ll be okay. We’ll get it fixed.”

“You don’t have to help me with this.” I leaned back and looked up at him with watery eyes.

His expression softened as he cupped my jaw with both hands. The pads of his thumbs rubbed along my cheekbones. “There’s nothing else I’d rather do,” he promised, pressing a light kiss to my forehead.

“You want to stand here and hold me while I cry?”

He shrugged. “I’d prefer if you were smiling or laughing, but I’ll take the tears.”

My stomach fluttered. “You’re a unicorn.”

“A unicorn?” He chuckled.

“Yeah. You know the mythical creature with a pink horn and that shits rainbow glitter. Most guys take off like a damn horse if a girl starts crying. It’s like their dick is allergic to tears. God forbid anything happens to their dick.”

“It is my favorite appendage, but I don’t think it will fall off because you’re crying.”

“Most allergies cause swelling, actually.”

Asher smirked as he gently ground his hips into mine. “Well, that fucking happens every time you’re around, so this isn’t much different.”

A tingle shot up my spine at the thought of him doing that with no clothes on but didn’t want him to know he affected me, so I rolled my eyes. “Shut up.”

“There’s my girl.” He grinned at me, his brown eyes sparkling. “Now, what did they really say?”

I puffed out my cheeks. It wasn’t a promising conversation. “They were going to send an adjuster and contractor out unless I have one, I want to use. I told them I’d call my brother. He’ll give me a realistic time frame and dollar amount. Then I need to call them back. I called Connor and left him a message. He’s probably on a site.”

He nodded. “I told Sheila it would be a while. She was more than happy to keep Nix for a few more hours.”

Even though I told him it was fine that he left, I was grateful he stayed. I wanted him with me. “Thank you, Asher.”

“Anything for you.” Dipping his head, he pressed the sweetest kiss to the top of my head. “Where is your car at?” He asked, looking back into the garage like the thought just occurred to him.

“I actually dropped it off at the shop to have my oil changed and tires replaced while I was out of town. It’s probably good it wasn’t here.”

“Yeah, the engine would’ve been fucked.”
