“Do you have anything you need to tell me?”
Hailo set the bottle down and shifted her hips toward me.
“About what?”
“Anything. Nobody’s seen or heard from Solana. She’s not at her apartment either.” Hailo didn’t take the bait. Instead, she blinked aggressively, trying to figure out where I was going with this. “You’re real calm about that. Shit too calm.”
“I spoke to Solana yesterday, and she was fine. What’s there to be worked up about?”
“I hope nothing.”
Hailo put on her best poker face but couldn’t fool me. She and Solana were up to something.
Chapter Thirteen
Iwas skeptical about tapping the green button as Hailo’s name floated across the screen. My family’s calls had increased over the last forty-eight hours. Tyson had gone as far as threatening my voicemail if I didn’t call him back. Aunt Xora had sent numerous texts, which said a lot for somebody who hated texting. I almost gave in and let her know I was okay because I hated to worry her. She had always treated me like one of her own.
Tapping the button, I held the phone to my ear without uttering a word.
“Bitch stop breathing into the phone. It’s me,” Hailo snapped.
“Oh hey, Lo.”
“Skip the pleasantries. The casino getting robbed has everybody worried. You need to call or text somebody other than me.”
“I don’t have a reason to.”
“Gianni is on my ass. Is that reason enough?”
I chuckled, listening to the agony in her tone. “You sound stressed for somebody not worried about Gianni.” That was usually her go-to line whenever one of us tried to talk Hailo out of her bright ideas, which would result in Gi fussing.
“I know when to ignore that man’s shit and when he’s not fucking around. Which one do you think is the case right now? You better learn the same with Quest.”
“I’ll text Gianni, but they can go to hell.”
Hailo sighed, “What is your plan, Sol?”
“I don’t have one yet.”
“Being a big sister is hard when the little sister doesn’t listen.” Hailo groaned. I imagined her massaging her temples and pacing whatever room she was in.
“What do you suggest I do then?”
“Be a big girl and tell them the truth. You know your family better than anyone. After a while, they will turn the city upside down, looking for you. You can’t keep reminding everybody you’re grown but acting like a scared child.”
“Are you going to tell on me?”
“Bye, Solana.”
“Hailo.”
“Not yet, but eventually, I won’t have a choice. I suggest you handle your business before it gets to that.”
“I hear you.”
Hailo paused in frustration before asking, “Other than that, you’re good, right?”
“Yes, Lo. I’m fine.”
