Page 23 of Unseen Danger
“You mean because the court might not want the kids with him if his lifestyle seems dangerous.” Nevaeh tried to focus on his soft blue eyes rather than the bulk of his size as she spoke.
“Exactly. But the police will hear about this one. James should be able to press charges against whoever did this to him.”
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Nevaeh glanced at Jazz. “We’d better search the property. The attacker’s probably long gone, but we might find something.”
Jazz nodded, and they started to turn away.
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.” Aaberg’s deep voice made them pause.
Nevaeh cautiously angled back toward him.
He hadn’t moved.
She breathed easier as she waited for him to explain himself.
“It might be dangerous.”
If anyone but a giant of a man who left her on the brink of a PTSD episode had said those words, she’d have snorted with laughter. Or at least given him the smirk Jazz delivered now instead.
He lifted his large hands with a small smile that almost looked embarrassed. “Sorry. You’re professionals. Go to it.”
Jazz gave him a forgiving smile. “We’ll let you know if we find anything.” She spun away with a bounce in her step.
“Come on, Al.” Nevaeh shook her head as she followed with Alvarez, lengthening her stride to catch up with her long-legged friend.
Jazz shot her a grin as soon as Nevaeh fell in step with her.
“Don’t tell me you really do have a crush on the giant bodyguard.” Nevaeh’s stomach swirled as she waited for a response. Probably because it wouldn’t work at all if her BFF had a boyfriend who terrified her.
“You mean the very muscled, strong, and attractive bodyguard?”
“Oh, man.” Nevaeh rolled her eyes before scanning the chain-link fence they were headed toward. “You are falling for him.”
Jazz’s musical laugh usually made Nevaeh smile. But it grated over her tense nerves this time. “You’re hilarious, you know that?”
“Uh-huh. I’m famous for it.” Nevaeh didn’t look at her annoying sidekick as she moved her gaze along the fence line ahead, some of it blocked from view by trees with leaves of vibrant orange and red. “Do you think we should split up?”
“I mean, you’re jealous.”
Nevaeh jerked to a stop. “What?” She stared at Jazz with an expression she hoped showed the redhead how crazy Nevaeh thought she was.
Very much the same look Alvarez was giving her right now, actually. He’d even stopped his usually constant panting to tilt his head at her.
Jazz laughed again. “You like him, and that’s why you’re acting so funny about me just being friendly with the guy.”
Nevaeh blew out a breath and started forward again.
“And, yes, I think we should split up. There’s a lot of ground to cover.”
“Fine. I’ll follow the fence starting there,” Nevaeh pointed the fifty feet ahead to the metal fence, “and you can cut across to cover the east fence line.”
“Sounds good. But Nevaeh...”
A touch on her shoulder made her stop and meet Jazz’s gaze.
“He is super cute, but he only has eyes for you.”
