“Yes. I slept well. That bed is really comfortable.”
Kane looked pleased as he set his cup on the counter. “I’m glad. Sit down, wrap up in a blanket, and watch some cartoons or something. I’ll get you some coffee and make some breakfast.”
She spent the day watching movies while lying on the couch. Kane moved all her stuff from the apartment to the guest room. When she offered to help move everything, he gave her a look so stern she just sat back down and went back to watching her movies. He spent most of his day in his office working, popping out several times to check on her, making her snacks and small meals, and ensuring she was drinking enough water. She wouldn’t admit it to him, but having him hovering over her the way that he did felt good.
Kane made them both sandwiches at lunchtime and cut hers into triangles, again without the crust. He let her feed herself, which, on the one hand, she was thankful for, but on the other, she missed him taking control. When she stopped eating after the second triangle, he scowled and told her to eat five more bites. She fought the urge to stick her tongue out at him because she was an adult, and adults totally didn’t stick their tongues out at bossy men. Except she couldn’t control her urge and poked her tongue out as soon as he wasn’t looking at her. Yeah. Totally an adult. But she smiled with satisfaction afterward and took another bite.
“What are you smiling about?”
Shoot. He wasn’t supposed to see her grinning like an idiot. She did her best to straighten her face, but her mouth didn’t want to cooperate, and she began giggling.
“Nothing.”
“Nothing, huh? Nothing to do with you just sticking your tongue out at me when you thought I wasn’t looking?”
She let out a squeak of shock and began giggling harder. She watched Kane’s stern expression turn soft as a slow smile crossed his lips, showing his brilliant white teeth. He really had a gorgeous smile.
“That’s what I thought. You know, Little girls who stick their tongue out get in big trouble.”
She stopped giggling and stared up at him with a shocked gaze.
“Well, I guess it’s a good thing that I’m not a Little girl,” she said, almost sounding like she was asking instead of telling.
Real smooth, dummy. Good argument.
Kane let out a bark of laughter. “Oh, I am positive you are a Little girl.”
She crossed her arms over her chest and glared at him. “Am not.”
He stared at her with pure amusement.
“Yes, I think you are very much a Little girl. A Little girl who still has four more bites to eat of her sandwich, or else.”
“Don’t want to.”
His amusement disappeared as quickly as it appeared, replaced with serious Kane. The Kane that looked like he wrestled with alligators. A shiver ran down her spine, though she hoped he didn’t see it. She didn’t want him to think he affected her.
“I don’t care if you want to or not. Four more bites, and you have five seconds to take one of those bites before you get into trouble. One.”
Her eyes widened. How could she get into trouble? She was an adult. Not a Little girl. No, she was going to take a stand. He couldn’t make her eat if she didn’t want to.
“Two.”
Shit. He’s being serious.
“Three.”
She looked up at him and realized he wasn’t messing around. Every hint of amusement and humor was gone from his voice, replaced with dominant steel. Yep, she was definitely taking a stand. Not giving in.
“Four.”
He raised his eyebrow, and she found herself quickly picking up the sandwich and taking a bite. Triumph filled his expression, and she wanted to stick her tongue out at him again, and she would have if she weren’t chewing her sandwich.
“Good girl. Although I shouldn’t have had to get past one before you obeyed.”
Hmph. Well, that just sucked. So much for proving she was an adult. She took another bite as soon as she swallowed the first one. Kane looked pleased with himself. Bossy ass. She wondered if he always got his way.
“You know you can’t always boss me around.”
