She and the great Luna both, he says, this time with a layer of confidence that lightens the tension in my chest that’s been there since the moment he became upset at Cara’s gravesite.

Thank you, I reply with a smile growing on my face. I reach for the handle to go back into the motel room, but Sophie is already opening the door.

“What are you doing out here?” she demands, then she spots the coffee in my hand that I haven’t even taken a sip of. “Oh. Perfect. I need this.”

She steals the cup from me and turns back toward the room. “Why are you up at this ungodly hour?” she asks after taking a drink.

“I’m a morning person,” I reply simply. Telling her I couldn’t sleep with her so close yet so far away might be a bit too much this early in the day.

Sophie groans and shakes her head. “Of course you are.”

I start to make coffee, this time in the room since I don’t have to worry about waking her up, and I swear I can feel her eyes on me. The need to turn around is strong, but I’m not stupid. If I push her, regardless of what my wolf just told me, she will run.

“What do you want to do today?” I ask without looking back at her.

I hear movement on the bed, the sheets shifting beneath her. “Do you have any more of those cloaking spells?”

My single serving of coffee finishes, and I grab the cup to add sugar before answering her. “Not likely. Everything I brought with me was in that cabin. The wolves likely already searched and took what was there.”

“How do you get them?” she asks, and I finally turn to face her.

Her cheeks have a red tinge to them, her chestnut hair is mussed—likely from all the tossing and turning last night—and her green eyes seem a bit red, but damn if I don’t still find her beautiful.

“Kyler?” she says, and it takes me a second to remember that she asked me a question before I got distracted with her presence.

“From the main protector headquarters or one of the safehouses, but the nearest one is about four hours from here, taking us even farther from the pack,” I answer, then I take a drink, hoping that some caffeine will keep me focused.

Sophie’s mouth flattens. “That won’t work. There’s a supernatural bar two towns over. We can go there for anything we might need.”

“Isn’t that a risk?” I ask, worried that wolves from her old pack might frequent there since she knows about it and she could be spotted.

“Don’t you worry about me.” She smirks. “Now, I’m going to finish my coffee and if you want me to spill all my old pack’s secrets, then you better have breakfast ready for me when I get out of the shower.”

She takes several gulps from her cup, then stands from the bed and saunters into the bathroom, seemingly without a care in the world. I watch her ass as she goes, unable to hold back my grin.

Breaking past her defenses just might be one of the greatest challenges of my life. Even if all I have to do is continue to supply her with food.

Chapter Fourteen

Sophie

Kyler didn’t disappoint when I got out of the shower. He had an array of items for me to choose from, including Pop-Tarts, donut holes, granola bars, and even a few selections of fruit.

When I grab a banana to go with my donut holes, he laughs. “Oh, good. You don’t survive only on sugar and carbs.”

“Nope.” I smack my lips together. “But I could.”

I wouldn’t allow it, my wolf says. Meat is needed unless you want me to start biting random people.

Well, that could be fun.

Don’t even consider it, she growls, making me laugh.

I don’t think I could, even if I wanted to drive her mad. I love a juicy burger and steak just as much as she does.

“Are you ready to go?” he asks as I finish the donuts.

I start shoving the things I didn’t eat into a bag. “Just as soon as I grab enough snacks to replenish my emergency food stash.”
