Dahy watched him with a bemused look. “Thank you.”
Konrad nodded. “I’ll get started on the food now, but take your time.” He took a few steps toward the door, then stilled. “You eat chicken, right?”
Dahy nodded. “I eat just about anything.”
“Good.” Konrad gave him one last look before leaving the bathroom. He glanced at the wine when he got back into the kitchen but didn’t pour a glass for himself. He’d take the car to go see Farris and Roan later.
He opened the bag of chicken only to stop again. Was Farris still in town? Hadn’t he said he was going back to Ordbury this morning? Grabbing his phone, he called him and held it to his ear with his shoulder so he could continue with the chicken.
It took some time, but soon Farris answered. “Boss?” He spoke low, and Konrad frowned.
“Is something going on?”
“Nah, I’m watching a guy.”
Farris did a whole lot of watching, Konrad had come to realize. “Who?”
“Don’t know his name, but he’s a member of the Ordbury pack.”
“You’re back in Ordbury?”
“Nope. I’m in Doson. I was on my way to Ordbury when I spotted him in the oncoming lane. I turned around and followed him. He went to Doson.”
What the fuck? It wasn’t against any rules to be in another pack’s territory, but most wolves avoided it. “What’s he doing?”
“Checking into the hotel.”
There was only one hotel in Doson. The park was across the street from it, and it was where Konrad suspected Farris was hanging out. “He’s staying?”
“Looks like. I can see him through the window, and the man working the counter handed him a keycard.”
It could be that he was here on business. Many wolves had ordinary jobs. “Do you plan to watch him all night?”
“Nah, I’m gonna see what he does and if he doesn’t leave right away, then I think I’ll head home.”
“I’ll swing by later, in two hours, maybe. Dahy is staying with me now.”
“Who?”
“The squirrel.”
“Okay.”
Konrad frowned at the chicken and contemplated telling Farris Dahy was his mate, but would Dahy want anyone to know before they were mated?
“See you then.”
“Ah, yeah, later.” He ended the call, placed the phone on the counter, and reached for the root vegetables.
Chapter 14
Dahy stayed in the tub until he resembled a raisin. The cabin smelled of food, and his stomach rumbled. The nuts were long gone, as was the wine. He put the book on the stool next to the tub and climbed out. With a towel wrapped around himself, he exited the bathroom.
Konrad was on the phone with someone but swept his gaze over Dahy, smiled, and gestured to a room that had been closed when Dahy had walked into the bathroom. It was open now and revealed a small bedroom where the bed took up most of the room.
Placing a hand on Dahy’s bare shoulder, Konrad gently guided him into the room and toward the closet. He opened it and grabbed a pair of too-big sweats, a T-shirt, and a hoodie and placed them on the bed, all the while he was keeping up the conversation, and since they were talking about a coffee house, Dahy guessed it was Roan on the other end of the line.
“Great. I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Say hi to Myka from Dahy and me.”
