Dahy frowned at him. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to say hi to Myka, but he wasn’t sure about the casual way Konrad let everyone know they were together. Roan might not be everyone, but still. Konrad pocketed the phone and gestured at the pile of clothes on the bed. “I know they’re too big, but better than nothing, right?”

Dahy nodded.

“I have to go see Farris after we’ve eaten. Will you be okay on your own?”

“Of course.” Dahy was always on his own, almost always, at least.

“Good.” Konrad hovered with his hand over his shoulder but didn’t touch him. “I think the food is about done, so if you want to…” He gestured at the clothes again.

Grabbing the T-shirt, Dahy put it on. When Konrad still lingered, he glared at him. With a huff and a grin, Konrad held up his hands in a disarming gesture and left the room.

A minute or two later, Dahy entered the kitchen in his too-big clothes. Konrad was in the middle of setting the table, and Dahy realized he’d fetched his wine glass from the bathroom and filled it anew.

“Have a seat. It’s not much, but some chicken and…yeah…” He gestured at a bed of roasted root vegetables sprinkled with salt and thyme.

“It looks great. I lived on bird seeds for the greater part of the week, so this is amazing.”

Konrad stared at him. Maybe Dahy should keep his mouth shut.

“Are you…Can you live off that?”

“Oh, I found this neat bakery right next to a park where they topped off the bird feeder every day. Lovely people.” He grinned at Konrad, but he’d grown stiff.

“What?” Had he said something wrong?

“Which park? Here in Doson?”

Dahy nodded.

“The one by the hotel?”

Dahy nodded again, and Konrad cursed viciously.

“What? What’s going on?”

“Before I called Roan, I talked to Farris. I wanted to check he was in town before I drove over there, and when I did, he was in the park, following a wolf from Ordbury who’d checked into the hotel.”

Dahy shrugged. “There are wolves everywhere. I don’t see how it has anything to do with me staying in the park.”

“But it could.”

Dahy didn’t think so. He’d never been to Ordbury. No one from Ordbury could come here and know he’d been in the park. He hadn’t been there for days now. His scent would be too faint for anyone to track, and it was in the middle of town. Tracking in the middle of a town was hard, too many scents, too many people crossing the paths, not to mention wild squirrels.

“Let’s eat.” Konrad motioned for him to sit, and Dahy did. He loaded his plate and when he took the first bite, he moaned, which had Konrad grinning.

Sipping on his wine, he realized Konrad drank water. “Don’t you want wine?”

“I plan on driving. I might have a glass when I get back, depending on what time it is.” He ate a bite of carrot. “Myka wanted you to call her later to decide on when you’re gonna meet for coffee. Roan wasn’t pleased.”

“Because I’m a squirrel.”

Konrad frowned. “No, because he’s worried about Myka. Someone will be at the coffee house at all times.”

“Great, so we’re monitored like little babies.”

A low growl sounded from Konrad and the hairs on Dahy’s arms wanted to stand. Fucking wolves.

“It’s to make sure you’re safe. A squirrel and a human—”
