“Maybe we should…” Dahy moved his fingers, trying to tell them they should shift and scatter, then his gaze fell on Myka, and he realized she couldn’t shift.
“Run, Jyran. Shift and run. I’ll stay with Myka.”
“Are you insane?” Jyran reached across the table and grabbed his wrist. “She’s better off without us. If the wolves are going insane, we’re the snacks.”
Dahy was fully aware, but Myka had helped him, he couldn’t abandon her. “Go, Jyr. We’ll…” He looked at Myka. “You have your car, right? We’ll run.”
Myka looked at Roan, who looked torn. “Yeah, run.”
“But my job. I can’t leave them.”
Dahy grabbed her hand and ignored the way Roan growled at him for doing so. “I don’t know what’s going on, but Konrad was uneasy coming in here. He said something felt wrong, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, it’s to listen to your gut feeling. If someone called Roan because there’s a problem, I don’t want to be sitting here without protection. I’d rather run.”
Myka nodded and before she’d finished the motion Roan pulled her to her feet. As they stumbled out onto the sidewalk, Roan turned to him. “Konrad was uneasy?”
“Yeah, something about Ordbury and how Farris keeps coming back here when he’s following people. He thinks someone is in contact with Ordbury somehow.”
Roan shrugged. “There are always people in contact over pack ties.”
“Yeah, I guess. He doesn’t like the new alpha.” Or he hadn’t said that, had he? He’d said they had a new alpha, and it didn’t feel right.
Jyran spoke fast into the phone behind them, then he hung up. He met Dahy’s gaze. “I’m shifting and running. Gideon is leaving home now, and we’ll meet halfway.”
Dahy pulled him into his arms. “Be careful. You’re my favorite cousin.”
“I’m your only cousin…that we know is alive.”
“See, favorite.” Dahy looked into his eyes and grinned. It didn’t matter if there were more cousins, right now he only cared about Jyran.
“Hide, Dahy. Get out of town and hide.”
He nodded. They could joke, but they both knew this could turn into a life-or-death situation in the blink of an eye, and squirrels often ended up dead in those.
“I’ll shift. Can you put my clothes in Myka’s car? I have my phone and keys in my pockets and this suit…” He ran his hands over the dark blue three-piece suit where you could see a flowery pattern on the fabric if you looked carefully. It most likely cost more money than Dahy had ever owned, combined.
“We’ll put it in Myka’s car.”
“Thank you.” He hurried around the corner of the building and into the parking lot. Roan was clutching Myka’s hand and restlessly looking around. Soon a squirrel skidded over the sidewalk and took to the closest tree. Dahy hurried and picked up the pile of clothes, careful not to drop Jyran’s phone.
Meeting Myka’s gaze, he spoke low. “Let’s go.” Urgency built in him, but he didn’t want to move. If they stayed here, they could pretend nothing was going on.
Roan kissed Myka hard. “Be careful.” Then he turned and ran.
“Okay, let’s go.” Myka hurried toward her car. Lights flashed as she pushed the unlock button, and Dahy more or less dove into the passenger seat.
Myka put the car in reverse and soon had them turned around. As she rolled out of the parking lot and onto the road, she shot him a look. “Which way?”
“You already picked a way.”
“No, I turned in the opposite direction of where Roan was running.”
“The woods.”
She tightened her hold on the steering wheel. “Are you sure? Wolves can run in the woods, I can’t. And there are no witnesses.”
True. “I don’t know. Just go.”
She increased the speed. The buildings swished by, and since Doson was a small place, they soon grew scarcer.
