Rhett just gives me a look. “Con, I think we can be something great, but we’ll never know until we try.”

“And then what?” I ask. “You’re the president now; you aren’t going to move here. And I’m just starting to love my life and job here. What are we going to do about the distance? Or are we just going to co-parent the best we can?” I don’t want to leave my job, because I love it there, and Cara is over here, too. I guess I have some time before I have to worry about these things, but they are things I still have to think about in the near future.

“I would love you to move to the clubhouse, yes, but if you are completely against that, then we will make it work somehow.”

I don’t know what I want.

The next day Cara surprises me by dropping in with some wine and Chinese food.

“Hey,” she says when I open the door, a genuine smile playing on her lips. “Are you busy? I feel like I haven’t seen you in ages, so I thought I’d see if you wanted to hang out.”

I open the door wider, excited, finally understanding what it means to be part of a family. A family that wants to hang out with you and cares about you. But then I realize I’m going to have to explain why I’ve been so detached. “Of course, come on in.”

She puts the food and wine down on the coffee table and moves to my cabinets to grab silverware and plates. “Is everything okay with you, Con? You seem like you’ve been a little...distant. I told you I wasn’t upset about Rhett, and I meant that.”

It shows how much she cares that she has noticed that. “I know, and I’m sorry. To be honest, I’ve been wanting to talk to you, but I’ve kind of been putting it off, which is why I haven’t seen you much.”

She comes to sit down and starts taking the cartons out of the bag. “Well, I’m here now. What do you want to talk about?”

I clear my throat, clearly uncomfortable, so she continues. “Is this about Rhett? You know that if you and Rhett want to be together, I’m fine with it. Yes, it will be a little awkward for me at the start, but that’s my problem, not yours. It’s not fair for me to stand in the way of you both,” she says, sincerity in her tone. “I want you both to be happy, and I wish you both the best.”

God, she is so sweet.

“Thank you, Cara. That means a lot. I honestly never want to hurt you, or see you upset, so that’s why Rhett and I originally said we’d just be friends. But we’ve been spending time together, as friends, and well—” I explain, wetting my suddenly dry lips.

“You don’t have to explain yourself,” she says, giving my hand a squeeze. “I appreciate you thinking of me. And I’m sorry I put you in a position where you felt like it was me or him.”

“I’m pregnant,” I blurt out. “That’s what’s changed, and Rhett knows, and you are the second person I’m telling.”

“What?” she whispers, eyes widening. “You’re pregnant?”

“I am. And before you ask, yes, it’s Rhett’s. I haven’t been with anyone else in months. I know that this is a huge mess, and it’s complicated, but I’m having the baby.”

Cara stands up and leans over me, giving me a hug. “Congratulations! Wait, this is good news, right?” She pulls back to look at me and I take the opportunity to study her expression, looking for any emotion that she’s hiding from me. I see nothing but happiness and affection, and it warms my heart.

I exhale, relief filling me. “Yes, great news. I was so afraid to tell you, especially after we got over the first revelation. Rhett—”

“Tell me he’s being supportive. If he is doing anything but being supportive, so help me God, I’ll kick his ass.”

I laugh, a full-belly one. And I feel the stress leave my body. Why was I so afraid of telling her? She’s my sister and of course she’d be happy for me. “No, no, he is. We’ve actually been...dating?” I make a face because I really don’t know what we’ve been doing.

Now it’s Cara’s turn to laugh. “You’re pregnant with his baby, and now you’re starting to date? A little backward, huh?”

“Are you sure you’re not upset? I don’t want to lose you, but this is a baby we’re talking about, and I’m already in love with him or her. And I want you to be as involved as you want to be.”

“I’m one hundred percent not upset.” She reaches over and rubs my back.

We sit there in silence for a bit.

“Can I ask how Rhett’s handling this?”

I sigh. “I just... I know it’s not ideal for Rhett. We are together but not together and he’s just taken over a whole MC, but I need to do what is right for me.”

“And Aunty Cara will be here,” she replies, sitting back down and studying me. “I have to admit, it’s a shock, though.”

“You’re telling me.”

“And you know what? Rhett will be an amazing father, of that I have no doubt. You should see him with Sapphire, it would just make you melt. Clover was telling me how he even brought her some flowers last time he went over there because he wants to set the standard for men who will date her when she’s older. I also heard that Felix went and bought her an even bigger bouquet of flowers when he found out about that, so we all know how spoiled my goddaughter is going to be.”
