“Somewhere I come when I need to get away from everything,” he answered, pulling the Ferrari into one of the spaces he and the others used.

His was the only car, which suggested none of the others were overhead flying. That was a good start. The last thing Sebastian needed was Rebecca spotting one of his brothers in dragon form before he could explain.

Explain? He wanted to balk at the idea. There was no way to explain who they were, no way to rationalize how a man could morph into a beast most people considered to be mythological, but he had to try.

“It’s beautiful out here.” Flashing him a smile, she reached for the door handle. “Can we explore?”

“Sure.” He released her thigh and watched as she climbed out of the car and stretched.

“The air is so fresh!”

“It gets even better the higher up you get,” he confirmed, nodding toward the top of Fireside’s peak.

“I’m not much of a mountain climber,” she admitted with a sheepish expression. “I’ll be keeping my feet firmly on the ground.”

“Me neither.” His heart hammered so loudly he was surprised she couldn’t hear it as he joined her in the fresh air. “I like to fly there.”

“Fly?” Her brows knitted. “You mean, you have a helicopter license?”

“Well, yes,” he conceded. “We own a helicopter and I can pilot it, but…” His words dried up as he hit the crux of the matter. He, and all his brothers had learned to pilot at their father’s insistence, but what came from him next would prove to be pivotal.

“But that’s not what you mean,” she concluded intuitively.

“Right.”

Jeez, I am in love with her. A woman who already knows me this well is perfect for me…

He inhaled a stabilizing breath at the realization. Nothing had ever been more important than the next few minutes would be. The way he managed his news, and how she received it—were everything.

“Sebastian.” Nibbling her lower lip, she reached for him. “What did you want to show me?”

“It’s a little… dramatic.”

That was one way of putting it.

“O-kay…” Her nerves would have been enticing, had he not also shared them.

“Actually,” Sebastian admitted. “It’s a little more than drama.”

How can I possibly explain?

“Just show me,” she pleaded. “Please, sir.”

“I don’t want to frighten you.” He chuckled at the ironic admission. “At least, not this way.”

“You won’t,” Rebecca’s voice echoed with resolve. “I trust you.”

“I know.” The confession buoyed him. “That’s why we’re here, but it’s complicated, little girl. My family is… different.”

“Different, how?” she probed. “They can’t be more fucked up than mine.”

“We’re unusual.” Placing his hand over her fingers, his gaze drilled into her wonderful eyes. “Our genes have a unique hybrid mutation.”

She giggled, the noise stirring his dampened libido. “Does that mean any children we have will have two heads, sir?”

His lips curled at her cheek. “Not quite.”

Sebastian loved that she was so comfortable discussing hypothetical futures with him—even in jest. “But there could be something special about them.”
