“But I understand why you don’t. Just please be careful. If he is a killer—”
“He’s not,” she protested.
“Assume the worst. If he is, he’s killed before to cover up his crimes. I don’t want you hurt.”
“Bobby would never hurt me. I’m the only family he has. The only one who remembers how it used to be before it all turned to shit.” Lucy was considering joining Sentinel in downing a few pitchers of beer. “Did the police say who saw the passport at Bobby’s place?”
“One of his girlfriends.”
“How many did he have?” Lucy asked.
“You don’t seem surprised he was cheating on Jenny.”
“My brother’s never been faithful to any woman. I thought maybe Jenny would change him. So what’s the skank’s name?”
“Do you want to talk to her?”
“She’s here?”
“Purple hair next to Warden. We’re keeping an eye on her.”
“Yeah, I would like to talk to her.”
“Come on, I’ll introduce you.” Evil slung his arm around her, and as much as she wanted to hate him for thinking Bobby was a killer, the comfort of his touch was just what she needed after the day she’d had. “Can I get you a bourbon? We’ve got Maker’s Mark.”
“Make it a double and you’ll get lucky tonight.”
“What happens if I make it a quadruple?” He winked at her.
She smiled despite herself. “I’ll probably fall asleep.”
“Can’t have that.” He pulled the chair back from the table for her. “Marla, this is my girlfriend. She wanted to ask you some questions about Bobby Bradford.”
“He’s a popular guy,” Marla said with a grin. She eye-fucked Evan as he walked to the bar and then chuckled when she caught Lucy watching. “You’ve got nothing to worry about. Your guy is steady. He could have joined in with me and the boys, but he didn’t.”
“What boys?” Lucy asked.
“Sentinel and Warden.”
Lucy shot Warden a scandalized look. “I need to go over there,” Warden said uncomfortably, and left the table.
Evan came back with a bottle of Bud Lite for Marla and a bourbon that looked like a lot more than a double. He winked at her when he handed it over.
“How come you’re not drinking?” Marla asked, with enough flirty boobage directed at Evan that Lucy almost kicked her.
“I’m the designated driver.”
“So, Evan tells me that you’ve been in Bobby’s apartment?” Lucy said.
“Yeah, it’s in Bay Shore. It’s nice. He shares it with a friend.” Marla drank half her beer in one gulp.
“What friend?”
“Never met him, but I heard someone come in one time when we were in Bobby’s room getting busy.”
Oh, ick.She was thankful Marla didn’t elaborate.
“Evan also said that you saw pills and a passport in the apartment. Where?”
