“Oh, Stan. Of course.”

Josh’s head whipped in her direction. She could feel the heat of his glare. She glared back.

“What?” she mouthed at him.

“I just saw the news. It’s very disturbing,” Stan said.

“Yes, Dina was very upset.”

“D-Dina?” he said tentatively.

“Yes, do you know her?”

“I was wondering if we could get together to talk. I think I have some information that might be helpful in finding out how that fire got started.”

“I think that’s great, but you should call the police.”

“I have. They don’t think it’s of any consequence. I’d like to run it by you. Can we meet for lunch tomorrow?”

“Sure,” she said, standing up to go to her calendar. “I have to be in the studio at five p.m., so if we can make it earlier, that would be better.”

“How about eleven at the East Park Diner?”

“That works for me.”

“I just want to meet with you. Come alone.”

“Alone?”

“Abso-fucking-lutely not,” Josh growled from right behind her.

She jumped and held up her finger at him.

“Is there someone there with you?” Stan asked.

“Yes, my boyfriend.” She cleared her throat and walked away from Josh. “All right. I’ll see you then.” She hung up before either of them could say another word.

“I’m going with you.”

“No, you’re not. He’s going to tell me something about who might have set the fire. He said the police didn’t think it was a lead. Besides, we’re going to be in a public place.”

“I don’t want you meeting him alone.”

“Too bad. You will spook him. I’ll be at a diner in broad daylight. He knows the studio is expecting me later. He’s not going to do anything.”

“I don’t trust him.”

She put her hand on his arm. “I know, but he’s involved in this as much as you are.”

Josh set his jaw and looked away.

“I’ll be all right.”

“Are you doing this for some thrill-seeking risk?” he asked.

Ashley frowned at him. “No. Talking with a balding widower isn’t my idea of living in the fast lane. And if you’re going to be nasty, you can leave.” She pointed to the door.

“Are you kicking me out?” he asked.
