She ground her teeth. “No. I don’t want you to go. I want you to stop being a dick. What do you think Stan will do to me in a diner during lunch?”

He closed his eyes. “He could hit you.”

“I’ll have him arrested.”

“He could force you into his car.”

“I’ll scream the place down.”

“At least tell me where you’re going to be. I promise I won’t interfere unless you need me.”

“Josh, he’s a source. He asked me to come alone. If I betray his trust, I risk him not giving me important information that we could use to help the police solve these murders. What if what he tells me keeps one woman and her child safe?” Ashley knew she wasn’t playing fair, but she had to make him understand.

After a long moment when they just looked into each other’s eyes, Josh took a deep breath and looked away. “All right. But call me as soon as you’re in your car after the interview.”

“Deal,” she said, hugging him. “Who were you texting?”

He stiffened. “Ryder and Evil.”

“Why?”

“I wanted to see if they were watching.”

“Why?”

“It was pretty shocking,” he said. “Like you said, we were just there.”

That didn’t seem like it would explain why he seemed so upset while he was texting, but he’d given in when she asked him to. And since it wasn’t really any of her business, she let it drop.

She tugged on his hand. “Let’s make it an early night.”

“You think you can get your way all the time by taking me to bed?” he teased.

“Pretty much.”

“Fair enough.” He moved quickly and tossed her over his shoulder.

She screamed and playfully kicked her feet.

“Quiet.” Josh smacked her ass. “The neighbors will call the cops.”

He tossed her on the bed.

As she watched him take off his shirt, she bit her lip. “You know, we don’t have to start the evening off in bed, as long as we end up here.”

“What are you getting at, wild child?”

“Something a little risky.”

“I’m listening.” He leaned against the doorframe, crossing his muscled arms over his chest.

“I really liked it when we were fucking on the side of the road, where anyone could see.” She twisted her hair around her finger. “Are you up for something like that?”

“Always. I’ve got just the right place for it too. Pack a change of clothes.” He winked at her.
