“Cheater,” she called, and hurried to her car so she could race him.

Her producer called her while she was pushing close to ninety and she reluctantly backed off to answer it.

“We got your serial killer.”

“What?” Ashley pulled off to the shoulder and put on her flashers.

“Lewis Jones, ever heard of him?”

Ashley racked her brains. “No. Why? Should I?”

“He worked at the Poconos Hunting Club.”

“Shut up,” she said, marveling. “Who scooped me?” If it was that little bitch Tina at the Pennsylvania affiliate, she was going to be so pissed.

“He suicided and left a note.”

“Shit.” Ashley couldn’t believe it. “What did it say?”

“The police aren’t releasing much, but apparently he confessed to killing Kelly Yost, Mira Donovan, and Alison Jones.”

“What about Sarah Stevens?”

“Her name wasn’t specifically mentioned, but it was revenge based on what happened to him at the Poconos Hunting Club.”

“What happened?” Ashley was on the edge of her seat.

“That’s for you to find out. Get on it tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow’s my day off,” she wailed before she could stop herself.

“You want me to give this story to someone else?”

“No,” Ashley said quickly. “I’ll do it. I’m on it. Where was he found?”

“Massachusetts. I’ll email you everything I have.”

“Great,” she said. Tossing the phone on the car seat, she merged back into traffic. She should feel elated. A serial killer had been stopped and the families of the deceased could have closure. Her fingers twitched to tell Josh, but she didn’t want to get his hopes up. Not without more information.

She was bummed that she was going to have to break their beach date, but this was more important. It was full dark by the time she got to his apartment. Josh was pacing back and forth. He had his phone in his hand.

“Where were you?” he asked.

“I had to pull over to take a call.”

He looked really cranky. Ashley figured she’d cut him some slack. Josh had come all the way into the city to pick her up and bring her back, after all. He must be exhausted. She was having a hard time stifling a yawn herself. But she couldn’t help wondering why he was so distracted. Josh had one hand on her arm as he led her to the back door and one hand under his jacket on the butt of his pistol in the back holster.

“Are you expecting trouble?” she asked, a little nervous at the way he was acting.

“Always, darlin’,” he said, relaxing a bit once they were inside.

He locked the door behind them, still brooding.

She wondered if she should tell him what she knew. Biting her lip, she weighed the pros and cons. It could wait until morning. They’d both get a good night’s sleep and then maybe he’d drive up to Massachusetts with her. That soothed her conscience a bit.

That being settled, Ashley walked into the bedroom. Taking his forest green comforter off the bed, she folded it up and put it on the chair.

“What are you doing?” he asked as she stripped the top sheet off his bed as well.
