Once she was sure they were safe, Amy turned and moved to stand beside Tope.

“How is he?” She asked, looking out into the center of the settlement. The male she had seen earlier was still strapped to a cross, his head hanging down as blood poured from his stumped arms and legs.

“Alive, but very weak. He will not survive.”

“Screw that,” Amy breathed, “We don’t leave anyone behind. If he is going to die, then he will die free, not tied up like that.”

She turned to Tope, “Stay here until I call you over. I don’t want you to be seen unless it’s unavoidable.”

Tope rumbled again in understanding and Amy eased away from the wall. She strode into the settlement, stepping over the dead bodies of the Korok aliens that littered the sand.

She kept her eyes off the other male, not wanting to see what these monsters had done to the poor man again.

Once she reached the second male, she reached up and touched his face. His eyes fluttered, opening to stare at the ground. His face was streaked from tears of pain, his skin hot and sticky and he looked very pale.

“Hey there, warrior,” Amy whispered, “I’m going to get you down and take you back to the Iron compound. You just need to hang on for me, okay?”

He opened his mouth to speak, pulling in harsh, ragged breaths as his eyes searched around him.

There was so much anguish in his dark green eyes that Amy had to blink back tears at the sight.

“Easy, big guy. Just stay with me. Stay alive. Iron is here. So is Cane and Cole. We won’t leave you behind. We’re taking you home.”

He opened his mouth again, the words barely a whisper as he croaked, “Kill… me… Please… kill… me…”

“Not happening, buddy. You’re going to be fine. Just hang on.”

Amy turned inward, looking to Kisma and Maku for what they could do to help the poor man. A small stream of the black suit flowed off her hand, running over his skin and disappearing up his nose. His eyes went wide for a moment, before he jerked a few times then his body went slack, and his head fell forward.

“What did you do?” she asked, panicked that he was so still.

“I have put him into a deep sleep so he will not feel pain. I will do what I can to keep him alive, but he needs more than I can give him, Amy. Not unless Maku and I both transfer to him. But that will leave you exposed.”

“Do what you can for him, Kisma. Maku, can you help me get him down?”

The suit on her hand morphed, changing into a razor-sharp blade. Amy cut at the ropes holding the man up and called for Tope to carry him back to the others.

Tope carefully pulled the male over the sand and away from the settlement, trying not to jostle his wounds.

Amy took another look around at the oasis and realized that she no longer heard the sound of fighting. Was it over? Had Iron and the twins killed them all already?

Her gut was telling her no. The twisting nerves inside her belly were telling her that something was wrong.

She ran over to the house she had seen the four aliens in and peered into the window.

Her heart sank when she saw inside. Iron, Cane and Cole all lay on the floor, unmoving. Iron had a dark patch of red blood staining his shirt, while Cane’s face was covered in blood. Cole lay still, his metallic arm bent at an awkward angle.

No, her mind screamed, unable to bear the thought that they were gone.

She reached out to Kisma again.

“The Korok have used a new weapon they were testing on the prisoners. It disables a cyborg's systems and renders them unconscious. They are alive, but if they are not woken soon, then Iron will die. He has enhancements in his brain that control his bodily functions like respiration and heartbeat. They are struggling to stay active. I am doing what I can with the bracelets they have, but I need my full strength to help them.”

“Shit,” Amy breathed, nodding. She had to save them, there was no other option.

“How do we stop the effects of this weapon they used?”

“Maku and I will absorb the pulses of energy that are still disrupting their bodies. This will wake them up and have their systems back online.”
