“Are you okay?” She asked, peppering his neck and chin with soft kisses.
“I’m fine. You, on the other hand, our brave little mate, are going to get your ass whipped for this little stunt.”
Amy chuckled, pulling away enough to press a hard kiss to his lips before she pulled out his arms and threw herself at Cane. He lifted her into his arms, holding her close as Amy pressed her lips to his.
“The others?” Iron asked when Cane finally put her down.
“They’re fine. I got them out and had Emi take them back to where our stuff is. Tope helped me get the other warrior off the cross and back to the camp.”
Iron nodded, stumbling a bit when he jumped out of the cage. Cane and Cole followed, steadying him, before they turned to the Korok leader.
The male was cowering away from Tope, his large body curled into a small ball in the corner of a building, whimpering quietly.
Amy had the male tied up and stumbling to keep up with Emi a few minutes later. A thin cord of black bound his wrists and stretched out to attach to the beast’s collar. Tope walked behind him, growling, and snapping his teeth when the male moved too slowly.
It took them a few minutes to get back over the dune. They found that the others had set up a camp, with three large tents standing side by side.
Iron ran past them, darting into the tent Dio pointed to.
Cole smiled wide when he saw his friend grinning at them.
“That is some mate you two found. I want one just like her.”
Amy laughed, “I’m one of a kind, Dio. Any news on the missing kids?”
“Safe. Lace found their convoy. They were dehydrated and frightened, but all accounted for and well. It looks like they were used as a lure to get some of our people into the desert.”
Cole smiled in relief before he went to the male, grasping his arm and pulling him into a quick embrace.
“You had us worried.” Cole said, stepping to the side so Cane could greet their friend.
“I won’t lie. I was worried too. Did you see what they did to Steel and Ash?”
Cole sighed heavily. The loss of a warrior was never easy on any of them, but to lose one in such a brutal way was not easy to come to terms with.
“How is Steel?” Cane asked, wrapping an arm around Amy’s shoulders. She leaned into him, but reached out, gripping Cole’s hand in hers and lacing her fingers between his. He smiled at her, but it held none of the light he usually felt inside.
“Not good,” Dio said, “Razor is not sure he will survive what they did to him. He is very weak.”
“And Ice?”
Dio lowered his eyes to the ground.
“Dio?”
“She was beaten very badly. They damaged her internal systems and caused massive hemorrhaging to many internal organs. Her nano healing is depleted from previous injuries.”
Sorrow filled Cole at the thought of his friend, their commander and leader, losing his mate like this. It would tear Iron apart to lose Ice.
“Will she make it back to the compound.”
Dio met his eyes, the pain making them glow, “Razor is not sure she will survive the night. He is doing everything he can, but…”
“Oh, God, No,” Amy said, her hands going up to cover her mouth, “Maybe I can help her. Maybe Kisma and Maku can help?”
Cole nodded, “Anything you can do for her, Amy, please.”
She nodded, pulling out of Cane’s hold, and rushing over to the tent. They followed, stepping in quietly to find Iron on his knees beside Ice, his head hung low as he held her weak, pale hand.
