He soared up, his enhanced leg giving him the strength before the wings flapped at his sides and he was lifted higher and higher into the air.

He spotted Cane, Iron and Ice doing the same, before they all winked out of sight.

Cole laughed. He was really starting to like these symbiotes.

“There is more to us than meets the eye, warrior,” Kisma said in his head, before he was pushed forward and towards the fortress.

Below, Cole saw the warriors getting ready to climb the mountain, no doubt grumbling about how they wished they had a symbiote as well.

Lace and Sena would lead the teams up the rocks, while Roam and Dio prepared the second wave.

“Lace,” Cole said through the com he had in his ear, “Wait until we disable the torrents.”

“We know. You and Cane focus on getting Amy and the other humans out. Iron and Ice will take care of the torrents. Once they are down, the rest of us will move in. Stay safe, my friend.”

“You too.” Cole said. He tucked his arms and legs in, making his body more streamlined, and raced towards the main courtyard of the fortress.

Chapter Thirty-Two

After they got Rachel up and out of the cell, Amy crept up to the only door leading out of the prison. She really wished they had anything to use as a weapon. A pipe, a rock… hell, even a stick would be better than nothing.

Rachel held her broken arm to her chest, the pain etched on her face making Amy worry about the woman. Rachel was a strong, fit police officer back home, and had spent most evenings when she wasn’t on duty at the local dojo training in mixed martial arts. But the pale look of agony on her face told Amy that she wouldn’t be fighting anyone today.

They all paused by the stone door. Amy tried to listen to any sound outside but failed to hear anything beyond the sound of them breathing.

“What now?” Mika asked, wrapping her arms around her skinny frame.

Amy wondered about taking the other three women with her. They were all weak and hurt. If they needed to fight, she couldn’t see them doing it for long.

But telling Sam and the others to stay here while she goes out would never work. If there was one thing she knew about them all, it was that they would never let one of them risk their life without the others.

“I’m going to open the door and see what's on the other side. We could very well be walking out into a room full of guards, so if they come for us, don’t fight them. Let them take us back to the cells. If it’s clear, we need to make our way up to above ground. If we can make it out of this creepy dungeon, we will be okay.”

“How do you know?” Mika asked, “If the cyborg finds us…”

“I won’t let him hurt you again, Mika,” Sam said in a determined voice, “If he comes near you, just run and find a place to hide. We will find you once it's safe.”

Amy wanted to ask what had happened to her, but now was not the time. From the look on all of their faces, it wasn’t good.

Giving each woman a quick look, Amy turned back to the door and eased it open slowly.

Peering out, she saw that it led to a wide-open area. Jagged rock stuck out from the walls, reminding her of the cave they lived in before she met Cane and Cole.

Light poured in from an open door to her left, revealing more stone doors along the back wall.

More cells, Amy thought as she took in the dark, damp space. Torn between going to see if the other women Mika mentioned were in them and getting her sister and her friends out of the room, Amy took a second to contemplate her options.

No. She needed to get these three women out first. Once they were safe, they could come back with Cane, Cole and the rest of the Iron militia and tear this place down.

Easing out of the door, Amy scanned the area for any movement. The space was empty, as far as she could see in the dark, so she motioned for the others to follow her.

They crept along the wall towards the open door. When they were close enough, Amy peeked out at the well-lit space beyond.

Her heart sank when she saw the three men that had come into the prison with the cyborg. They were huddled around a small table, talking animatedly about something.

She looked around the bright space but couldn’t see the cyborg anywhere.

Loud shouts carried into the room from further in the fortress, making the three men jump to their feet. Calling out commands to the Korok soldiers that had run in, the three men gave each other a panicked look before they ran out through another door to the side.
