Page 83 of His Cursed Heart

"Why are you asking about Ivan?" He asks with confusion.

"Because he was her main bodyguard, and he's not exactly the kind who's mute around women." Arius rough voice makes goosebumps all over my skin.

"Ivan is the head of my security." Everette says angry, but he's not taking Ivan side.

Confusion takes over me too. Ivan was the one who welcomed me in Chicago. I never thought of the possibility that he can be the one who killed Keres. But why would he kill her?

"I found a fingerprint on Keres's face in her medical records and since the gun doesn't have any, this might be your only lead." Arius says calmly. They have the gun that killed Keres but didn't tell me?

You just give me reasons to hate you, husband.

"I'm not sure it's Ivan yet, I need something of his so that I can match the prints." Arius adds.

I stand from my position and I try to think and make some connections but I can't.

"I was never here." I tell the guards and they give me a short nod.

I let my legs take me to the garage where I find Everette's car collection. I don't know what I'm doing here but at least it's quiet.

My mind is stuck between Ivan and the early event with Everette. It doesn't matter how much I try to stay away from Everette, to make him hate me because I end up more confused than ever. He's pushing me until he makes me see just him and ignore everything that happened. Not even my sleeping pills are working anymore.

I dream about him in all stages. Happy, angry, confused, aroused. I take sleeping pills since my mother left me. The pills are keeping the dreams away, the nightmares. They've been the only comfort at night and now they aren't working anymore.

A wet nose brushes against my legs and I look down to see Trinity, my sweet Dobermann who wiggles its tail in delight.

I lean forward and take her face in my hands and start coddling her. Trinity licks my face and I smile at her energy. She was a gift from my father when I turned the sweet sixteen, the only good thing that he did for me.

When I get her off me a sudden weight appears on my back. I know in a second that Anubis is on my back because I forgot to cut his nails and now he's scarring my back.

I turn to settle him down and I see in his mouth a

pair of blue keys. I take them immediately thinking that my stupid dog would eat them, because it wouldn't be the first time he eats something weird.

I realize that the keys are from one of his cars so I push the button that opens the car and look for the light to see which car Anubis picked. When I see the blue BMW that Everette was repairing weeks ago an idea struck in my head.

I smirk and went to the car, eyeing the beauty. It's not as beautiful as his Bugatti, but it's nice...and expensive.

I start walking around the car in the hope I'll see something damaged, but it looks brand new. I grab the key and keep walking until the uncomfortable sound of the key scratching the car is heard. I draw a straight white line and when I'm in front of the car, I draw a big heart with a knife in it.

A laugh makes me stop and my dogs start growling coming on each side of me.

I turn slightly and see the familiar face of Ivan. I try to stay calm and not alarm him by showing him that I might know something.

"You like it?" I ask with a fake smile. He comes near me but Anubis barks violently, making him stop at about two feet away.

"What has he done now?" His question seems weird. I look at him and observe that his chest looks way bigger than it used to be.

"Playing with my patience." Ivan laughs again and my skin is full of goosebumps. "What happened with your chest? Too many burgers?" I raise my eyebrow. He doesn't answer me right away, looking at me skeptical.

Take a big breath, Althea.

"It's an anti-bullet vest. New security costume." My eyes are stuck on him.

"I'm not sure it's Ivan yet, I need something of his so that I can match the prints." Arius words are making me move without realizing. I go in front of him and my dogs aren't leaving my side.

"I hope you won't need them." I look in his eyes and something crosses his vision.

Anger. Confusion.
