“What is it?”
She kept her eyes latched to the blank screen.
“Are you looking into the future?” I asked.
Her full lips pulled up in a tiny smile. “I’m deciding if I want to turn my phone on or not. I told Mia I would be out of pocket and she encouraged it.” She shook her head with her distress. “I’ve just never not had my phone on since I started LMS. I’ve never given myself a break.”
I put my hand over her screen. “Can you let yourself breathe for a couple more hours? I know it’s hard. I usually am on my phone too. But, after everything that’s happened, I’d hoped we could have a retreat from work.”
She sighed, relenting, and putting the phone on her lounge pad. “You’re right. I’m just paranoid.”
“If it makes you feel better, I was a wreck with my first breach.” I shrugged. “But you deal with it.”
“You were?” Her eyes widened. “I didn’t think you get wrecked for anything.”
She had no idea.
I took her hand and kissed her fingertips. “No more work talk. And plus, we’re almost to our destination.”
George and Hannah zipped across the boat and prepared the boat for docking, tightening and loosening ropes.
“Let’s wait by the cockpit,” I said.
Lucia and I exited down the wooden dock and onto land once the boat was secured in the slip. I was glad to be on stable ground considering how unstable I felt inside about coming to terms with my feeling for Lucia.
Our overly sun-tanned guide waited for us, a foot sinking in the sand as the waves rolled over from the mass of blue-green sea. “Mr. Holte?”
“Good morning.” I held my hand out to shake his. “This is Lucia.”
“Hello.” She threaded her arm through mine, pinning herself to my side. I liked her there.
“Welcome to Dolphin Cove.” He tugged at the keys hanging from a lanyard around his neck.
Lucia looked up at me, her eyes wide. “Dolphins? Are we seriously going to frolic with the dolphins?”
I nodded. “You heard correct.”
“Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Kenneth, and I’ll take you out in the water. The dolphins have been a bit wary to come to shore, but we’ll go out on the jet ski to see if they want to play. Once I take you out, I’ll leave you in private, if you wish, and return in an hour. Sound good?”
“Absolutely.” Lucia grinned. “That sounds amazing.”
I stared at her; my own smile inevitable. I couldn’t stop thinking, I’d done that. I made her smile wider than I’d ever seen, and it was something I always wanted to do for her.
We lagged behind Kenneth as he walked up the shore a short distance to where two jet skis bobbed on the water. “Have you ever been on a jet ski?”
She shook her head. “No. Never.” She dropped her hand from my arm, but I caught her fingers with my own. She looked at me.
“You can sit behind me,” I said.
“I hope you drive a jet ski better than you do a car.”
“I’m an excellent driver.” I acted insulted.
“I know. I’m just messing with you.” She pressed her cheek against my shoulder.
Once we were settled on the jet skis, Lucia squeezed her slim, smooth thighs around me. I drove my palm down her thigh, cupping her knee. “You can ease up. I promise you won’t fall off.”
She loosened her legs, giving me some room to move. And just as I geared up to set us on our trajectory behind Kenneth, she ran her hand down my stomach, straight to my crotch.
