“You wantchildren?”

“Children, yes.An alpha, no. I would rather go the IVF route.”

“Why?”

“Because Idon’t crave sex. I don’t seek it out. I don’t understand the fuss.It traces back to before we had contact. It was what made it soeasy for Mark and Timmins to use me to hide theirrelationship.”

His astonishedexpression made her smile.

She pulled thebedding down and kicked her slippers off, easing herself into thesheets. “Good night. I have my alarm set for tomorrow. I won’t missthe appointment.”

He walked overto her and kissed her forehead. “Sleep well.”

“Thanks for thesave.”

He nodded butdidn’t reply.

The door wasnearly closed, and she kept the compress around her neck until shefell asleep.

She wokefeeling very warm with an arm around her waist. She turned, sawAlohi, and sighed. She checked her phone, and she still had twentyminutes until it was time to get up.

Haravin alsosaw several missed calls. She listened to the messages, and it wasthe police. She returned a call and spoke softly. “Hello, I amlooking for Sargent Agerton?”

She waited andwas transferred.

“MissDillard?”

“Yes. I decidedto go somewhere safe.”

“The hotel saidthey had gotten you a new room.”

“Yes, but hefound me once and bribed security to ignore me, so I did not trustthem. One of your officers should have taken my statement when theywere here. Is he still in custody?”

“No, ma’am. Hehas been released.”

“Of course.Well, I will get a medical report on the damage to my neck and hiptoday and send it to attach to the police report. Wait. Is there apolice report?”

“No, ma’am.There is a drunk and disorderly report, and the hotel is droppingcharges in return for repairs.”

She touched herthroat and said, “What if I want to press charges?”

“You will haveto come in.”

“Fine. I havean appointment at ten, but I will come in after that. Can you sendme a reference number?”

“Of course. Iwill text it to you.”

“Thank you. Howdid you get my number?”

“From thehotel.”

“Of course.Right. I will be in touch.”

She hung up andwaited. When the text came through, she used the number to make areport and take a selfie of her neck damage.

Alohi askedsleepily, “What are you doing?”

“Documenting myinjuries, saving them to the cloud in a few places. Mark has askill for making evidence disappear.”
