“Oh yeah, I forgot about him.” Laura’s face cleared.

“Who?” Whitney scrunched her forehead.

“That guy.” Laura tapped on the photo, and Whitney laughed, nodding.

Cami’s heart sank. “Show me?”

Laura turned the phone but the person she indicated wasn’t Vincent Menardi as Cami feared. Laura was pointing at Trey Crawford. Cami doubted that Vincent Menardi was involved but she needed to be sure he hadn’t come to Stoverton as well.

“No one else?”

Whitney sighed, but looked again. “Nope.”

“How do you know him?” James asked.

“He was one of those guys we told you about. Sitting in the coffee shop pretending to study, but really they just had a crush on Amy.”

“And he was one of them? You’re sure?”

“Oh yeah. He and Amy had an art class together. He was really sweet. Good tipper, too.”

“Were they friends?”

Laura cocked her head. “I wouldn’t say friends, they didn’t hang out outside the coffee shop. She thought he was nice, and they’d talk sometimes if we weren’t busy.”

Cami felt goosebumps rise on her arms. This was an opportunity. Trey had to have resented his older brother taking out and then being a jerk to a woman he cared about. If they were friends, there was a chance if Trey was shown the evidence, legally obtained or not, he might rethink the alibi he’d given Matt.

James adjusted the heat as they pulled onto the highway. Both were quiet, lost in their own thoughts after they’d left the diner. Cami was the first to break the silence.

“I know next to nothing about your other stepbrother. Do you think he’d tell the truth? With the necklace, we know he must have lied about Matt’s alibi. Amy was in that SUV, and Trey and his mother both said Matt never left that night.

“I don’t know him at all. Cara had the most interaction with him. She says he’s devoted to his mother, but she doesn’t think the brothers are close. You could possibly flip him, but Matt and Courtney will wall him in with attorneys before they let him talk to the police again.”

Cami chewed her lip. “We need to get to him away from them. I could share the evidence we have that proves Matt killed her.”

“Somehow, I don’t think it will be that simple.”

“We also need to get Matt’s DNA somehow. Even if the police can’t use it, we can give it to the Hawthornes.” She refused to let James deter her. Excitement grew as she sorted through ideas in her head.

“All these society things you hate. That bachelor auction…” James arched an eyebrow. “Is that the kind of thing Matt and Trey would go to?”

“Giving to other people? I doubt it.”

She scowled. “Then we will just have to think of a way to make sure they go.”

It took almost the entire drive back for Cami to wear James down and for him to make the phone call. After the promise of a large check and his agreeing to be a guest speaker at a multitude of women’s society functions, they had what they needed.

Matt Crawford may not have been on the list of top 10 Atlanta bachelors, but suddenly Alanna Hughes required the presence of ‘one of the most attractive up-and-coming movie execs in the industry’ to be the featured auction closer. It took less than an hour for Alanna to call James back with the information that, of course, Matt and his brother would be attending.

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

James didn’t want to leave Cami at her offices to record her newest episode. Even though Gerry promised to make sure he saw her safely to her car, James was uneasy driving away. Technically, Cami’s house was ready if she wanted to return, but James didn’t want her to leave.

“I thought maybe you’d quit.” Luke strolled across the thick carpeting to James’s desk. “I know I said the workload is lighter than with the prosecutor, but you still have to come in now and then.”

James didn’t look up from the notes he was reviewing. “I checked in with Loretta several times during the day and still monitored what my associates were doing. Can’t do anything about a jury getting the flu.”

Luke dropped into the chair in front of James’s desk and plucked a pen from its holder, and began tapping it on his knee.
