James sighed. “What?”
“See, I was going to say I liked that you are nicer lately, but now you’re back to being a grumpy asshole.”
“Sorry to disappoint.”
“She’s good for you.”
James didn’t bother to ask who his brother meant. “I know.”
Luke blinked, clearly surprised by his easy victory. “Are you ready to admit you’re in love with her?”
James’s ribs tightened on his lungs. “Would it kill you to mind your own business?”
“Ah. You are in love with her.”
James set down his file. “It means there hasn’t been the right time to have a conversation about it.”
“I don’t get it. Why do you need to have a conversation? Just tell her you love her.”
“I will. It’s complicated. I’m not sure she’s ready to hear it.”
Luke shook his head. “It’s really not. I used to think it was, but once you say it, it’s the easiest thing in the world.”
“If I recall correctly, Dahlia told you she loved you first, and then you still managed to royally screw it up for a while.”
“I don’t remember it that way.” Luke waved his hand. “She’s ready. I’ve seen the two of you together, and I’ve seen the way she looks at you.”
“You don’t know for sure.”
“Neither will you until you tell her—with the actual words.”
“Since when are you so logical?”
“What can I say? I’m a man of many talents.” Luke said smugly.
James waited until late in the afternoon to text Cami.
James: Was your car delivered?
Cami: Yup. Needed a starter. Thank you for having it brought here. It was very sweet.
James: You need your car. Almost done for the day?
Cami: Yep. Just doing a couple soundbites.
James drummed his fingers on his desk, his nerves getting the better of him. But while he was thinking of the best scenario to tell her how he felt, she sent another text.
Cami: Your friend called to say the security system is ready. He emailed over a packet of information, but someone’s going to meet me later to teach me how to use it and then I’m meeting Madison for dinner.
James ground his teeth. Damn it, Brady! But his friend didn’t know that James was still thinking of excuses to get her to stay another night.
James: Text me when you are heading home. I’ll meet you there.
Cami: Looking forward to it. (winky face emoji)
CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
“Are you out of your mind, Cam?” Madison had practically shouted into the phone.
