Cami winced. There was no way Madison could have listened to the entire rough cut of the podcast episode she’d sent over less than an hour ago.

“You aren’t just insinuating that Matt Crawford is involved in Amy’s murder. You are calling him out. ‘A listener with verifiable ties to Matt Crawford has offered new forensic evidence that definitely puts Amy in his car.’ Do you want him to sue us?”

“I didn’t say the night she disappeared. I chose my words carefully. He admits she was in his car during their date.”

“That is not what you’re implying,” Madison accused.

“No. But I’m tired of him getting away with shit because of his money.” Cami’s anger sparked. “I ran the words by the attorney this afternoon before I recorded. We are in the clear.”

“The attorney? You mean James.” Madison let out a long sigh. “Cami, I’ve had to leave my home over this case.”

Guilt speared her. “I know. I’m sorry. But, no, I meant the podcast’s attorney. If it makes you feel any better, James is going to hate this as much as you do.”

Madison growled quietly. “You know I’m paying you back for that security system upgrade.”

“The what?”

“The company you sent to upgrade the system?” Unease edged Madison’s voice. “Warfield Investigations.”

“He just can’t help himself,” Cami muttered, recognizing the name, but there was no true anger behind her words. James was a protector. It’s just who he was.

She and Madison had needed to fend for themselves for so long, it was nice to have someone looking out. “Warfield Investigations. That’s James’s friend Brady’s company. He installed a system at my house, too.”

“Oh.”

Cami could tell by the sound of her friend’s voice she wasn’t sure what to make of that. Warmth flooded her body. James might not have said with words how he felt, but his actions spoke volumes. He knew how important Madison and Jax were to her and he’d made sure they were safe as well.

“Can we do dinner tonight? I miss you and Jax.”

“It’s only been a couple of days,” Madison pointed out. “But yeah, I’m dying to get out of my parents’ house.”

As promised, Cami left early so Gerry could walk her to her car. She headed to her own house to meet the security company representative. It crossed her mind momentarily that she could swing by the hotel to get her clothes from James’s suite, but she quickly banished it.

She should be embarrassed that she was looking for an excuse, like a teenager, to stop by a guy’s house. When it came to James, Cami was learning she didn’t have a lot of shame.

To her surprise, the man waiting in her driveway was Brady Warfield himself. He offered her a wide, affable grin as she exited her car. He was incredibly handsome, but his twinkling green eyes had nothing on seriously intense, gray ones.

“Hey, Cami!” To her surprise, he enveloped her in a hug before quickly releasing her with a mischievous grin.

“Hey?”

Brady winked at her. “I just want to be able to tell James later that I hugged you, when he asks how your orientation went.” He winked at her. “I love irritating him, and until recently, it has always been really hard.”

Interesting.

“Okay, Cami, let me show you all the features.” Brady walked her to the front door, rattling off all the specifications of her new system.

She held up her hand with a laugh. “I’m not going to remember any of that. Just the basics.”

“No problem. We went ahead and changed the locks, too. Yours must be old because it was pretty obvious by the worn buttons what your code was.”

“So, I’ve been told,” she said dryly.

“Huh. I wouldn’t have thought James was that smart.”

Cami bristled, but she wasn’t about to point out that it hadn’t been James who picked up on it.

Her voice was sharper than she intended when she said, “James is extremely intelligent. He’s also decent and honest, and it would never occur to him to try to break into someone’s house.”
