“I’m sorry I caused you so much trouble.” Cami forced a smile. “Your mother is lucky to have you. I bet you helped a lot.”

Trey looked bashful, completely at odds with the knife in his hand. “I was studying graphic design, so I fixed the pictures for her. I owed her after she and Matt helped clean up this mess.”

Is he referring to Amy as a mess?

“That can’t be all.” Cami forced herself to look admiring. “I bet she needed you to get rid of her rich new husband.”

“I made the letterhead for the companies and designed the websites so that they could order the thallium on the internet.”

Her chest ached for James. “Courtney poisoned him? How? You’re clever. Did you come up with a way to do it? I know he was careful with what he ate, but you and your mother have outsmarted everyone.”

“It was pretty smart.” Trey nodded. “But that wasn’t me. He had the idea to put it in David’s cologne. That way even if they weren’t around he would still be getting dosed.”

Acid rose in Cami’s throat. “Matt or Chris?”

“Should have been Matt.” Trey’s lip curled. “She’s always saying how smart Matt is. He’s not. He’s stupid and lazy. But Mom still gave him Bloom Communications. No, it was Chris. He hired those guys who took care of that housekeeper after she spoke to Declan, and he came up with the will, too. He knew his dad would sign whatever my mom told him to, and the Blooms trusted Dr. Keller and Chris so they were perfect fake witnesses. If the Blooms want to be mad at someone it should be Chris, not my mom.

Cami struggled not to yell at him. Trey sounded like he genuinely believed that he and his mother were innocent.

“The only bad part was David died quicker than they thought,” Trey continued. “Chris wasn’t happy. Said it looked suspicious that it was so close to the date the will was signed. Then Dr. Keller had that surgery, and my mom sent me to talk to him. He was sloppy on those pain meds. I heard him tell Luke everything.” Trey shrugged. “So, he had to go.”

Cami wouldn’t have thought anything could surprise her at this point, but his casual comment about killing his father did.

“He burned to death.” She couldn’t keep the horror off her face.

Trey scowled. “No, he didn’t. I’m not a monster. He was dead before I started the fire. It was a split-second decision. If you think about it, he was the actual monster. I heard what he said, and when I told him he had to tell Luke he lied, he refused.” Trey looked outraged. “Then he started saying things about my mother. Terrible things about how she'd ruined me and used me for her own benefit.” His face hardened and his eyes turned black. “No one talks about my mother like that.”

“He was your father.”

“I didn’t know that until just before. Mom thought I could use that to make sure he stayed silent. I couldn’t believe his nerve when he said telling the truth about the will and David Bloom was all for the best. He was going to take care of me once my mother went to jail.” Trey laughed. “Dr. Keller was a speck on my mother’s shoe. They all are. I had to protect her.”

“You told Matt about the rainbow blanket. And when he mentioned it in front of witnesses, it made him look guilty.”

Trey wagged a finger at her. “I told you, he’s not the smart one. I am. Matt is the perfect person to blame for all of it.”

Cami shook her head. “All he has to do is offer his DNA and then it will prove he didn’t kill Amy.”

“He can’t do that anymore. He’s already confessed.”

“What?”

His face blanked. “This afternoon Matt invited me to his penthouse, and said he was done protecting me. Like he was brother of the year.” He gave her a cold smile. “It was him or me. I made sure he conveniently left a note confessing to Amy’s and Dr. Keller’s murders before he jumped off his balcony. They’ll find it on his computer, if they haven’t already.” Trey smirked. “I could hear the sirens when I was leaving.”

“You murdered your brother?”

Before Trey could answer, the sound of the outer door opening drew both of their attentions. Trey’s brows lowered, and he moved toward the door.

James! Thank god!

However, the voice that called her name was not his familiar baritone.

“Cami? What are you doing here on the weekend?” Then the horrifying sound of baby laughter.

“Mads, run!” Cami screamed, even as her friend stepped into sight, Jax on her hip.

The world slowed as Cami’s pulse thundered in her ears. She saw Madison’s eyes round and her mouth open to scream as she turned to shield Jax with her body. Trey lunged for Madison, but Cami caught his arm and held on to slow him down. She felt a burning pain, and her fingers lost their grip.

Everything happened in a rush as a figure appeared behind Madison, shoving her and Jax toward the door as he stalked forward. Three long steps, and then Trey was slowly crumpling with a smoking hole in his forehead.
