“You what?” Madison sucked in a horrified breath.
“It worked out! I spotted a friend from college earlier, and I got to James in time to ask him to play along before Kip spoke to him.”
“Kip spoke to him?” Cami winced at Madison’s shrill tone.
“He didn’t believe me, or maybe Kip really did just want to meet James, but he insisted on being introduced.”
“And this guy—James went along with it? Kip believed you?”
“Definitely.”
“And now you’re in this guy’s hotel room—naked.”
“That about sums it up.”
“You want to hook up with him. I know you. You would have just gone home.”
“I was a mess from the drinks. No rideshare would take me.”
“Bullshit… shoot… Sorry, Jax. You went up to his room because you wanted to. Why are you denying it?”
Sometimes having a best friend who knew her so well was annoying. “Our past is… complicated.”
“Is he hot?”
“Offensively so.”
“Then what’s the problem? Is he married or something?”
Cami’s heart clenched for a second before she remembered his aversion to the bachelor auction. “No, definitely single.”
“Is he gay?”
“Definitely not. He dated a lot in college.”
“So why don’t you bang this James guy and… oh! This isn’t the James, is it?”
Cami chewed her lip, wishing she’d never told Madison about her infatuation with her college best friend.
“Yeah.”
“And he invited you up to his room? He wouldn’t do that if he wasn’t interested.”
“He’s just being a nice guy.” Except he wasn’t. He’d been a dick almost from the first moment he’d opened his mouth tonight.
Why had he offered?
“Do you think he might?—”
“Oh my god, Cami. You are a smoke show, and he invited you up to his room. He is definitely down, if you are.”
“I don’t know.”
“What’s the worst that can happen?”
I can get attached and get my heart broken again.
“We were just talking the other day about how long it’s been for both of us. And how the amount of time it takes to weed through all the duds on the apps isn’t worth it. Do you think he’s a secret serial killer? If you don’t feel safe, you should get out of there now.”
