Madison: He does now, and he tagged you in the picture. You should go look.

Cami sat up in bed, pushing her blankets away. She typed James’s name into the app, and sure enough, there was his account with the pictures she had posted a couple of days ago.

However, her breath caught when she saw the photo he had posted the night before. It was a group picture clearly from their college days. Cami couldn’t remember when it was taken, but it showed them seated in a restaurant crowded around a pizza with their study group. Underneath, James had written,

Happy to have reconnected with this beauty again @Camelliamessina

Cami’s phone rang, replacing the photo on the screen.

“Why would he do that?” she asked Madison when she answered. She placed the call on speaker phone and pulled up the photo again. “Why does he even have that picture?”

“I guess this means your class went well last night,” Madison teased.

Cami frowned. “It was fun, but we didn’t exactly leave on a happy note.”

“What happened?”

“It turned out it was just James and me in the gym, and everything was going well—great even. Hitting something is surprisingly therapeutic. You should try it. Anyway, we were having fun… Then one thing kind of led to another.”

Madison squealed. “Yes!”

“We didn’t have sex, but it got pretty far.”

“Boo! Why did you stop?”

Cami’s body heated with the memory. “I didn’t. James remembered there were security cameras in the gym. He said his friend would delete them, but then he started with the whole ‘this is a mistake’ speech. Then he asked if I wanted to amend our contract to include sex.”

“Ouch. That’s cold.”

Cami flopped back on her pillows, exhaling a loud sigh. “I don’t think he meant it that way, but I was pissed. I don’t understand why he would post that picture? Is this his way of apologizing? Also… Why does he still have this photo? The way he acted at graduation, I figured he would have destroyed everything with me in it.”

“Don’t be dramatic, you didn’t burn down his house. This might be a radical suggestion, but… You could ask him.”

“Shut up. It’s too early to be rational.”

“When are you supposed to see him again?”

“Tuesday night, I think.” Cami rubbed a hand across her eyes. “One minute he seems like the old James, and the next he acts like I’m a stranger that he only marginally tolerates. I’m not sure I’m up for this emotional whiplash.”

Cami groaned. “This seemed like such a simple idea a week ago.” She sat up and swung her legs out of the bed. “Enough about my pathetic fake love life. How are you feeling today?”

“It’s a waiting game,” Madison sighed. “I’m meeting my lawyer again next week, and there’s a preliminary hearing the following week.”

“Already?”

“My lawyer says it’s standard. It will be to assign a guardian ad litem for Jax.” Madison’s voice quavered a little, despite her confident words. “A third party to look out for his best interests.”

“I’m here for whatever you need. You know that, right?”

“I know. Do you mind if we don’t talk about it? I get so upset thinking about Felix, and I don’t want Jax to pick up on my anxiety.”

“Of course! Do you want to do brunch?”

“Thanks, but I think if I have any alcohol, I’ll cry in my mimosa.”

“We don’t have to have mimosas.”

“Then what’s the point of brunch?” Madison chuckled. “Thanks, but I think Jax and I are going to hit the park. The weather is nice, and I don’t know how many of these days we’ll have.”
