James pointed at his door, and Luke laughed as he turned to go.

He paused at the door. “I waited too long to tell Dahlia how I felt about her… Don’t make the same mistake.”

His phone buzzed on his nightstand.

Luke: What the fuck? Why didn’t you tell me?

James: Tell you what? That you’re a moron and it’s past midnight?

Luke: That Matt Crawford is connected to Cami’s case.

James sat straight up in bed.

James: It’s already out?

Luke: Dahlia has an alert on her phone for when they drop. I told you she’s a huge fan. She’s still on Vancouver time. She woke me up.

Luke: She’s worried about what Crawford might do

An icy feeling settled over James.

James: I haven’t listened yet. She names him?

Luke: He’s the last call the girl that was killed made. And she said he lawyered up and isn’t cooperating with the police.

Fuck! He knew Cami was going to talk about Matt Crawford, but he hadn’t realized she was going to call him out so openly… or so soon. James groaned. Knowing Cami, she was hoping to provoke a reaction. Hadn’t she said he wouldn’t return her calls?

James looked at his watch. It was too late to call her. She was probably asleep. Most likely, Matt wouldn’t even know about it yet. It was the middle of the night, and the episode just came out…

James: Thanks for giving me the heads up.

Luke: Does she know about…

James hesitated.

James: Yes.

Luke: She could be in danger.

James’s lungs tightened.

James: I’ll take care of her.

Luke: Let me know what you need us to do.

Unable to fall back asleep, James downloaded the latest episode, lay against his pillow, one arm folded behind his head, and listened. Cami’s rich voice filled his room, setting the scene for what happened in the immediate aftermath of Amy’s disappearance. Madison offered an occasional interesting detail, but Cami was the main narrator as she described who the police first wanted to speak with and why.

It wasn’t until the sound bite of Amy’s friends talking about her disastrous date with the rich older man that his mood changed. His muscles clenched as he listened to her reveal Matt Crawford’s identity.

“But he has an alibi, right?” Madison asked.

“Yes, but it’s from family members. His mom and brother. He admits he received a call from Amy that night, but he hired a lawyer and has refused to speak with police since.”

“That’s not necessarily a sign of guilt. Many people hire lawyers to protect themselves. He’s a wealthy, important man.”

James frowned. Madison was laying it on a little thick.

“It could be that he genuinely has nothing to add because he barely knew her.”
