Chapter 17 – Tyler
“What the fuck do you mean you took her to the airport?” I screamed at Gabe.
“She came out of the therapist’s office crying hysterically, and when I tried bringing her here, she started crying harder. Asked me to take her to the airport.”
“And you just took her to the airport. No questions asked about where she was going?” My arms were waving around for dramatic effect.
“Look, Mr. Wendell, you are paying me to…”
I cut him off. “I’m paying you to keep an eye on her!”
“All due respect, but you are paying me to look out for her well-being. I wasn’t going to go against her wishes when she was a mess like that.”
My fingers rubbed my forehead in frustration. I appreciated Gabe looking out for her. I really did.
“Where do you think she’d go?” He asked.
“I don’t know. She’s been so off the deep end lately that I have no clue what she’s doing.”
A moment later, my phone vibrated in my pocket with a text from Sam.
“There’s our little runaway now,” I mumbled.
Ty, please don’t be mad. The therapist got me to open my eyes about some things, and I just need a little time to think. I’m going to Kansas for a couple of days to see my dad. I’ll be home soon. I love you more than anything, Tyler Wendell. Don’t you forget it.
“She’s in Kansas.”
“Going to see her family?” Gabe asked.
I shrugged. “I guess. Look, I’ll let you get out of here. I’ll call you when she’s back in town or if I hear from her again.”
He nodded and walked out the front door. Truthfully, I wasn’t mad at Gabe, but I felt fucking useless.
Pulling out my phone again, I dialed Sam’s number, but it went right to voicemail. She must have already gotten on the plane…or just turned it to Airplane Mode to avoid talking to me.
I had no clue what the fuck went on in that doctor’s office, but I sure as shit was going to try to find out.
Chapter 18 – Sam
The next morning, I woke up on the old couch that sat in the living room of my childhood home. My dad sat in his recliner reading the newspaper.
When he saw I was awake, he said, “Morning, baby girl.”
“Morning Dad,” I muttered while stretching.
“Why don’t you go pour yourself a cup of coffee? And then maybe you can come back here and tell me why you flew across the country with no warning to show up on my front porch in tears.”
Nodding, I headed toward the kitchen and poured a large mug.
When I had arrived the night before, I was a crying mess. All I wanted to do was lay on the couch, and I guess eventually I just fell asleep.
No wonder my dad was eager for answers.
“Where are Luke and Jessie?” I asked looking around for my brothers.
“I sent them into town to run some errands. Didn’t figure you’d want them all in your business.”
“Thanks,” I said taking a seat back on the couch.
