A few days later, Tyler was on a plane heading to Los Angeles, and my plan was finally ready to be put into motion.

But first, I had some business to take care of…since it might very well be my last night on Earth if this ends badly.

I asked Gabe if we could take a trip down to New York. He hesitated, but when I said I was going with or without him, he reluctantly agreed.

After a drive that seemed to take forever, I got out of the SUV instructing Gabe to wait outside while I stormed into the building. I recognized the doorman from the couple times we had been there previously, and when I called him by name, he let me go right past without issue.

As I got off the elevator, I knocked on the door, and Theo Wendell answered. “Well, hi, Sam!” He exclaimed.

“Hi, Theo. It’s great to see you, but I’m actually here to see your wife if she’s in.” The thought suddenly crossed my mind that I should have called ahead of time before driving all the way to New York.

But my worry was unwarranted when Theo said, “She’s in the office. Right this way.”

We made small talk as he walked me to the large mahogany door.

I took a deep breath, and without knocking, barged right on in to see Maria sitting at one of two large desks.

“Sam?” Her face didn’t look happy to see me. “Why are you here? This is wildly inappropriate.”

I held up my hand and started talking before I lost my nerve. “No. I’m talking. You have said what you had to say, and it’s my turn.”

She leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms over her chest but remaining silent.

I went on, “You don’t think I’m good enough for your son? Fine. I really don’t think I’m good enough for him either because he’s a wonderful man, but you know what? Nobody on this Earth could love him more than I do. He’s everything to me. I will spend every day for the rest of my life showing him that fact. And if you want to take away his trust fund and his shares in the company, I’ll still be there, standing right by his side. Hell, it might make it easier if you took away all of his money. Then, we wouldn’t be living under your control.

“And I’m sorry if barging in here like this is rude or disrespectful, but all you’ve done since we’ve met is be rude and disrespectful. And quite frankly, I am done letting other people tell me how to live my life, so here I am…the poor girl with the plain looks and the really fucking foul mouth telling you that no matter how much of a bitch you are to me, I don’t care. Play your games. Do whatever you want.

“I’m here to tell you that I don’t care how much shit you throw my way because I’m not going anywhere, so you better get used to me really quick.” I leaned down, resting my hands on the desk in front of her. “You want a fight? Fine. For your son, I will go to war.”

Without giving her a chance to say a single word, I stormed out giving a pleasant goodbye to Theo who seemed to be listening at the door.

As I was walking out, I heard him say, “You threatened to cut him off? What is wrong with you, Maria?”

I would probably pay for that scene I just caused, but I didn’t care. She needed to know that I wasn’t going anywhere, so she might as well get used to me.

As fire continued to flow through my veins, I knew it was time. It had to be done before I lost my nerve.

I pulled out my phone and scrolled through my contacts until I found who I was looking for.

When the voice on the other end answered, I spoke quietly.

“Hey, it’s Sam Flemming. I need your help.”

Chapter 34 - James

I sat in my car listening to the police scanner trying to kill some time. I was supposed to be going out on a date with some young piece of ass this evening, but I have a few hours before I need to be at the restaurant.

Needless to say, my badge works like a charm in getting pretty young things into bed with me…especially if I play the card that I’d been shot before. If I show them the scar on my shoulder, their panties practically drop to the ground. Little did they know that the scar came from me falling off my bike as a kid, not a bullet.

I’d been messing with Samantha for a few months now, and there was nothing better than watching her squirm. Not even all the barely legal pussy I was getting. No, one day, I would give Sam exactly what she deserved. I’d teach her a lesson one more time with my dick and then beat her until she was unrecognizable.

For years, she had evaded me, but she fucked up when she brought her new playboy boyfriend into town. It stuck a big X on her location on the map, and I immediately asked for a transfer. When I first saw her, I couldn’t believe how shitty she looked. No make-up, baggy clothes, hair a mess. I don’t know that Wendell guy puts up with that. Back in the day, I would have been really quick to put her in her place if she tried to leave the house looking like that.

Ever since she left me in high school and dragged my name through the mud, I vowed to get my revenge. As for what my friends and I did to her, she deserved every second of it. No one embarrasses James Sinclair and gets away with it.

My phone rings, and I look down and see it’s Detective Macintosh. Probably calling again to see if I have any leads. He’s such a stupid old man. The guy he’s been looking for has been right in front of him for months, and he has no fucking clue.

“This is Adler,” I answered, using my changed name.
