She nodded.
“I’ll meet you in the bedroom with a snack and cuddles.”
Sisters
Letting Niev rest and catch up on some sleep, Blake carefully got out of bed and dressed the next morning. Just as he walked into the kitchen, he got a text from Ann.
Do you two want to have breakfast together?
Yes, but Niev is still sleeping. Could be a little while longer, she was exhausted yesterday.
How about we chat out on the porch and drink coffee while we wait?
Sounds good.
Blake walked out and sat on the porch swing. The air was crisp, but not cold. Though the sun was rising, it wasn’t peaking over the mountains quite yet. With two large, steaming cups and a sweet smile on her lips Ann walked up and sat next to him.
“How is Niev? I didn’t mean to keep her up late last night.”
“She is fine. It was just a long day yesterday–not in a bad way.”
“Her bump has grown so much. The twins will be here before you two know it.”
“I know.”
“Are you still nervous?”
“I’m shitting my pants.” Blake tried to make it sound funny, but Ann must have seen through his façade.
“You’ll be a wonderful father.”
“I hope so.”
“Have you talked to Niev about it?”
“Of course, and she is just as terrified as I am.”
“Oh gosh! You two slay wolves and monsters together but two tiny humans bring you to your knees,” Ann laughed, but Blake could see a sadness in her eyes.
“What is on your mind?”
Her eyes flicked up to him wet with tears. “Everyone keeps asking when Kareem and I will have kids.” With each word the sadness turned into pain. “We’ve been trying, but haven’t had any luck. I guess Selene has other plans for us.”
He quickly took her hand in his. They’d never been particularly close, so her confession struck him deep. “Selene knows us better than we know ourselves. Your time will come.”
“I know, but I wish I knew when.”
“I’m sorry, Ann. I had no clue.”
“Oh, I’m not telling you to make you feel bad. I just… well…”
“You had to tell someone.”
She nodded.
“I know those words mean nothing to you, but your time will come.”
“They mean a lot, especially from you. You’ve suffered for so long and now look at how happy you are.”
