Ann giggled and Niev turned even redder. “I’m trying to learn from our pack healer. I want to help her.”
“Interesting, but isn’t your gift a healing one?”
“It is, but I want to be able to heal without relying on it.”
“A very wise choice. I’m sure pack life is very different from what you have known so far.”
“It is, but I’m getting used to it.”
“What is the hardest part of it?”
Niev didn’t have to think about it. “I think the feeling of being taken care of. I’m so used to earning my own money and having to worry about how much food I can buy or how to pay rent that it’s hard for me to grasp that I don’t need to worry about those things anymore.”
“Which is why you seem to have chosen to do your part as a healer. You want to contribute to the pack’s wellbeing.”
Niev nodded and Carissa gave her another warm smile.
“What has been the easiest part to get used to?”
“Blake’s family.”
“Your family,” Ann corrected her softly.
“I’ve only met your family briefly, except Ann of course, but I can see how lovingly they must be.”
Niev gave Ann an insecure gaze before shyly admitting, “When Blake and I first met, I was afraid of his family. When he told me I would meet them I was terrified. I didn’t know about wolves, so Blake was very secretive about his life.”
Ann gently took Niev’s hand in hers. “I’m glad you trusted Blake to bring you home to us.”
“I am too.”
Carissa moved to stand up. “I just came to say that my father and mother would like to invite you both for dinner again tomorrow. Only if you don’t have other plans yet?”
“I don’t believe we do.”
“Wonderful. I think Mother just wants to make sure you’re truly okay.”
“That is very sweet of her.”
“Thank you for indulging all my questions.” With a wave Carissa walked off.
“I’ve never seen her that curious,” Ann admitted.
A moment later, her eyes lit up and a smile spread on her face. Niev followed her gaze and saw Kareem come closer. He grinned as he sat next to Ann and lovingly kissed her cheek.
“I see your brother is enjoying himself, but have you two had a good time too?”
Ann leaned against Kareem. “We did.”
“I saw Carissa walk away from you both. Everything okay?”
“Yes, she was just curious about Niev and Blake. Oh, and Alpha Raymond has invited them both for dinner again tomorrow.”
Niev watched Blake and with Kareem now cuddled up to Ann, she felt the urge to feel Blake close too. Of course, as soon as she felt the urge Blake felt it too and started prancing toward her, leaving a few disappointed children behind.
‘I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to ignore you.’
As soon as he was close enough, she reached for his now dry fur. “You didn’t. I don’t know what came over me.”
