“Look, I know I went a little crazy, but this is for the twins.”

Too tired and also a little terrified to see what Jason handed over, Niev kept her eyes closed. Knowing him, he’d gone overboard.

Blake must have nodded and was now walking out into the cool night where he gently placed her in the passenger seat.

“Take care of her, okay?”

“I promise I will, and I’ll make sure she sends you lots of pictures.”

“I still don’t like you.”

“I thought as much,” Blake chuckled. “I like you though, and we don’t have to be best friends to keep her happy.”

“Can you just be a dick for a second? Gosh you’re so diplomatic.” Jason hugged her and she opened her sleepy eyes to give him one last smile. “Text me when he acts like an ass and I’ll come save you and the girls.”

“I’ll miss you.”

“Fuck, I’ve been missing you.”

Before she could tear up, he closed the door and walked off.

“Bye asshat,” Blake shouted after him with a deep rumbling laugh.

Without turning around, Jason waved his middle finger at him.

Still grinning, Blake sat next to her and drove off.

“What did he buy the girls?”

“Enough clothes for them to reach their teenage years without us having to buy anything.”

“I’ll text him tomorrow to say thank you.”

Welcome Home

Their last evening on the Timber Territory came far too soon. Overlooking their clearing, Niev tried to blink away the tears as Blake did his last walk through of the house to make sure they hadn’t left anything behind. They’d packed all their personal belongings, only leaving the larger things such as the bed, tables, and couches.

They’d taken all of the twins’ furniture. Niev hadn’t been able to leave anything of theirs behind. Not that anyone had made her feel bad about it. In fact, Blake had insisted on it.

Warm arms wrapped around her, tugging her into a warm hug. “I think we got everything.”

She took a deep breath and leaned into Blake’s touch. “I’m sure if we leave anything behind, we’ll get it back eventually.”

“I have no doubt about it.”

“I will cry a lot,” she admitted, already struggling to hold back tears.

“I might be right there with you.”

“No… You’re supposed to be my sturdy rock.”

He kissed her check, his chest vibrating against her shoulder blades as he chuckled. “I will try my best, but I can’t make any promises.”

She joined his chuckle before moving to leave. “We should go. We’re late for our own party.”

Niev couldn’t bear to look back at their home as they walked off the clearing and down the path. She held on to Blake’s arm tightly, needing his touch and strength to soothe her aching heart.

As soon as they walked into the house and Mayra spread her arms to hug her, Niev’s tears started to spill. She couldn’t help it. That place had become her second home, even a refuge. So many good memories had formed there that it was hard to let go. Her pregnancy hormones didn’t help either.
