“The one in your room in the main house.”

Blake came closer and wrapped his arms around her. “It’s slowly starting to feel like home.”

A Pack Bond

As Blake got ready the next morning, anxiety underlined his excitement. He could feel Niev experiencing the same whirlwind of emotions through the bond. The ceremony would be in the evening, so they decided to continue their unpacking and go see Natalie.

Though the house was covered in boxes as they still decided how they wanted to decorate everything, it was slowly becoming their home.

Handing him the last of the plates, Niev looked around them. “Break time?”

“I was about to suggest the same.”

“We could see if Natalie is in and if not, we can take a stroll?”

“Sounds like a plan.”

Holding hands, they walked over to Natalie and Kayus’s house. Here and there people greeted them, but none stopped to talk.

Natalie was excited to see them and happily invited them into her home. Unlike Christa’s, they walked right into her kitchen.

“My office is in the back of the house, but I think we might be more comfortable in the living room. Do you two drink tea?”

They both nodded.

“Let me get us some while you two get comfortable.” Natalie pointed at a door to the right.

Sitting next to Niev on the couch, Blake laid his hand on her thigh, caressing her with his thumb. To his disappointment, she’d chosen to wear tights under her dress, the weather getting slightly too cold for her comfort. He’d always enjoyed feeling her bare skin when the weather had been warmer.

Natalie set the tray of steaming cups on the table and settled in an armchair before them with a notebook on her lap.

“Christa told me that our way of life is quite different from what you know, including our medicine and healing practices.”

Niev bit her lip but seemed too shy or even embarrassed to say anything.

“There is no need to feel as if your words could hurt me. I’m well aware that human medicine is far more advanced than ours. We are a little behind on that. Is that something that is on your mind when you think of your birth?”

Niev nodded. “I guess I was always one of those women who didn’t want to feel any pain during birth. I just wanted it to be a beautiful and less stressful experience.”

“I do have a few tricks up my sleeve. If it is pain relief you are looking for. I have had a few women that have had the same wishes as you and have trained to set IV lines and give medicines.”

Niev sighed. “I don’t think they’ll work on me. I think my body processes medicine differently. I think it’s one of the reasons I got pregnant in the first place.”

“I was thinking the same. Though our wolf blood makes it harder for us to medicate ourselves, it’s not impossible. A higher dosage usually does the trick but traditionally most women refuse. Unfortunately, I think you are right, a higher dosage might not help and I have to admit I’m not willing to experiment with your life, or the girls’ for that matter.”

“I mean at the beginning I was terrified, but I guess I have no other choice but to deal with it.”

Blake felt responsible and horribly guilty for Niev having to face a fear of hers like that. She gently squeezed his hand and smiled up at him.

“It’s not your fault.”

“It does feel like it though.”

There was a moment of silence as Niev reassured him through the bond.

“Have you two thought about who you would like to have there during the birth for support?”

“Mayra, Blake’s mom, and sister-in-law, Lyliann will come for the birth. And you and Ann, of course.”
