“Someone needs to supervise us without distraction.”
She laughed and followed them back to their home. Mark and Kayus were easy going and Blake seemed to get along with them very well. As they approached their house, Niev saw Natalie sitting in one of the rocking chairs.
“I didn’t do it,” Kayus joked as he walked past her and disappeared into the house.
“I’m not here for you, my love. I’m here for the wonderful lady behind you,” Natalie called after him with a smile.
“And here I thought I was the most important person in your life!”
Natalie patted the chair next to her and Niev sat down, setting her bag on the floor.
“How are you feeling?”
“Tired, but that’s normal at the moment.”
“I have spoken to Christa and exchanged notes on your pregnancy journey so far, but I was hoping we could meet up soon to talk about your birth plan.”
“I don’t really have one,” Niev admitted, feeling horrible for it.
“There is nothing wrong with not having one. I was just hoping to get an insight into your wishes and expectations. Not just for the birth itself, but what you expect of me as your midwife. I think it is very important for us both to be on the same page as to what role you would want me to play and what your needs will be during the next few months.”
“I would like that very much.”
“Wonderful. Whenever you are ready, please come see me.” She pointed at a house covered in roses. “I live right over there. And Blake is of course always invited to come too. I always like when the fathers come along too, so everyone is in the same boat.”
“Okay.”
Natalie stood up. “Well, let me know if my man misbehaves.”
“I always behave!” Kayus protested from inside the house.
“Of course, you do,” Natalie giggled before waving goodbye to Niev and walking to her cute little rose house.
Inside, the men had set down everything they'd brought in and placed them in the appropriate rooms.
“We’ll go back and grab the next round. Don’t pick anything heavy up, okay?”
“Okay.”
Blake crooked his eyebrow. “That was too easy.”
“Well, I know you’ll be back in a few minutes. If you’d be gone longer, I’d probably lose patience and just do it myself.”
“That sounds more like you.”
“At least she is honest about it,” Mark laughed and walked out.
The afternoon was spent unboxing everything and setting up the furniture they’d brought with them. Though Niev wanted to finish the girls’ room first, she waited for Blake to set up everything before she started to unpack their clothes. Mark, Kayus, and Fallon stayed until all the big stuff was reassembled and then left Niev and Blake to do the rest.
As she was folding up the last of Emlyn’s and Aruna’s clothes, Blake called her into the bedroom where he’d started to unpack their own.
Her jaw dropped as she walked into the room. Above the bed hung a beautiful painting of Selene’s tree, purple lanterns hanging from its branches. Standing by the tree’s roots, were Blake and herself, a big black wolf watching over them. Niev was wearing her wedding dress while her hands were held by Blake’s.
“Mother wanted to surprise you with it. She hoped it would make you feel homier here.”
“It’s gorgeous! My new favorite painting of hers.”
“Which one was your last?”
