“A few weeks, but we wanted to be sure, you know?” Lina’s words sounded apologetic.
Kendra quickly wiped her tears away. “I’m so happy! Oh, I can’t wait to go shopping!”
Kendra was truly happy for them. She loved them both to the moon and back–they deserved this. Though her tears were those of a woman who missed her mate, they were also joyous ones. She couldn’t wait to go shopping for Lina and the baby. Maybe she could even find a baby manual for Mike, just to be sure.
Mike pulled her into another hug. “Thank you.”
“Oh, don’t thank me yet–you haven’t seen the toys I’m going to get!”
“I think he was just nervous that the news would hurt you since you haven’t found your other half yet,” Lina explained and pulled Kendra to the table.
She wasn’t wrong and Kendra wouldn’t lie about that. “It hurts a little, but that doesn’t mean I’m not happy for the both of you. I’ll just have more time and money to spend on your baby.”
“Kendra, you know there is no need. The other moms will shower us with all their things.”
“Oh please, my nibling will be spoiled by me until I have my own.”
They sat and ate dinner, simply enjoying each other’s company. Her heart seemed lighter, her mind more focused on her goal.
Upon arriving back home, she ran right into an argument between her father and Kent. They were in the office, their voices echoing through the door. She was about to go upstairs when she heard her name.
“Oh yeah, perfect fucking Kendra… Kisses your ass every moment she can.”
“Kent! You should be here doing these things, not her. She is picking up your slack, while she should be preparing for her life with her mate.”
“Oh please, nothing I’ll ever do will be enough for you… Even if I were here each second of the day you still would find something to bug me with.”
Kendra quickly made her way upstairs, not wanting anyone to catch her spying.
She’d never heard them argue, at least not like this. It didn’t make her feel bad, but now she was worried that Kent would have a change of heart. Now that she had her mind set on taking what was hers, she didn’t want him taking it away from her. Since she wasn’t able to give her wolf their mate, she’d tried to please her with the plan of becoming alpha. If the pack saw Kent’s behaviour change, they might not be so likely to accept her as their new heir.
Chapter Eleven
Four months had passed since she left Ryker behind. Since then, she’d spent more time with her father–and even more time training her wolf. They’d slowly become a good team. At that moment, she was trying to track down Mike, who was hiding somewhere nearby. He’d given her many lessons and tasks to complete which her wolf absolutely loved. The more time Kendra spent with her wolf, the easier it felt to be with her. Her wolf had become more of her sister rather than an intruder in her brain. She was like a little puppy that needed to be entertained so she wouldn’t do or think of anything stupid.
Even though Kendra was in control of her wolf’s body, her wolf loved the hunt. Walking through the thick trees of the forest, Kendra used her wolf’s instincts to track down Mike. She’d lost him a few miles down after he’d walked through a small creek, but she’d been able to pick up his scent quite quickly despite him trying to trick her by shifting or rolling in the mud. It helped that she knew him so well, as did her wolf.
With a deep breath, she tried to distinguish between the forest’s smells and the one she was so familiar with. She had a feeling that he was close, as his scent was slightly stronger than before. As quietly as she could, she crept through the forest.
A movement, one so tiny she would’ve missed it with her human eyes, made her look to her side. There he was, hidden beneath the roots of an old dead tree, covered in mud. Happy she’d successfully completed the task, she jumped at him and stuck her nose into the roots.
“Damn, I thought I had you there,” he chuckled and pulled himself out of the dirt.
She stepped back giving him enough space to shift so he didn’t have to stand in the woods completely naked.
‘You’re getting better,’ he praised.
‘I think it’s because I know you too well.’
‘Take a damn compliment, woman.’
Flicking her hair back like in those beauty commercials she grinned at him. ‘Well thank you.’
‘I’ll let Lina know we’re on our way back. She’s really excited for your shopping trip.’
‘She’s going to be sick of me when we get back,’ Kendra laughed and ran after Mike.
Before picking up Lina, Kendra stopped at home to take a shower and with a warning not to spend too much money, she headed to the garage. The pack shared most things with each other–such as the cars. The keys were always hanging up and if someone truly needed one for a certain date and time there was a sheet where one could reserve a car.
