“Maybe, but he only altered his route when he was directly by the blood line. He should’ve known about it.”

Gabriel shrugged his shoulders. “We won’t know unless he comes back and tells us. Now eat before you join the patrols.”

“Is that you or Adrianna speaking?”

“That obvious, huh?”

Chapter Thirteen

The pack had taken the announcement better than Kendra would have expected. A few weeks had passed since her father had accepted her as his true heir. Since then, Kendra had tried to be as open as she could with the pack and had welcomed anyone with questions or concerns to come see her. She’d taken on more and more of her father’s tasks to get a feel for what she was getting herself into.

She and Avery got along very well and he’d even made her train with all the warriors. He and Mike had taken her under their wings–or paws, rather–and pushed her to her limits each time she was with them. The other warriors had been sceptical at first, many of them being friends with Kent, but after a while they warmed up to her.

Currently, she was walking over to Benjamin’s cabin. Though he hadn’t linked her, she’d felt his pull. To her knowledge he refused to link with anyone. His door opened just as she approached.

“Sorry I couldn’t come earlier.”

“You’re a busy woman from what I hear.”

She sat down at the table just like last time. “I wanted to come talk to you anyway.”

“And why is that?”

“Because I wanted to know if you would like to be my lead warrior.”

He inhaled a sharp breath. “I thought never having to call him alpha was my payment.”

“This is not payment. I want you because you are good.”

“What about Mike?”

“He wasn’t as highly ranked as you.”

“So, you would risk losing your best friend?”

“Leading isn’t about making friends. It’s about making decisions for the wellbeing of the pack.”

“I’m no longer a warrior.”

“But you could be if you want to return.”

“I don’t need your pity.”

She shrugged her shoulders. “It’s just an offer.”

He leaned back and studied her closer. “So, you’re not gonna ask why it took me so long to call you?”

“I’ve heard as long as I don’t hear from you, it’s good news,” she laughed gently.

“I guess people still remember me then.”

He reached for some papers on the counter and spread them out on the table. The first one was a map which she unfolded and quickly recognized the Blood Wolves Territory.

“I mapped it out.”

She crooked her eyebrow and looked at him. “How close did you get?”

“Close enough that if they found my tracks, they would think I was traveling around their territory.” He must have seen how nervous that made her. “I’ve stayed away from the pack for a long time now. Wolves can’t pick up the scent.”
