She stood up and looked down at him, tears no longer blurring her vision. “Think about being a warrior again. Not just because of this but because you’re a damn good fighter.”

He gave her a cheeky grin. “But then I would no longer be able to be my luna’s spy.”

“Ah… I see your point,” she laughed as she left his home.

She took the long way back to the village, knowing she had to calm her emotions before seeing anyone. She wasn’t sure yet how she should use this information, but she knew it was the key to her success. She tried to work through her emotions at first, but then she gave up and buried them deep in her mind, right next to the memories of Ryker and their broken mate bond.

When she was ready to face people again, she walked back home, needing to finish up some of her assignments she’d been ignoring. Her father was in his office together with Avery and discussing a renovation they had planned for one of their buildings. The pack not only owned the buildings, but the construction company that did all the renovations–it was where most of the pack’s men worked.

“I was just going to grab those boxes and start filing all your old paperwork.”

“Ah, I see. My way of work is no longer accepted in the new reign.”

Her cheeks blushed. “That’s what you said.”

“I was going to talk to you about this tomorrow but since I have you both here I might as well do it now.”

“Is this one of those talks where I have to sit?” Kendra asked.

Her father nodded, so she sat down, a knot forming in her stomach. The high she’d been feeling since Benjamin had revealed his findings was over before she could even enjoy it.

“No need to look depressed, my child.”

“You seem very serious.”

“She’s right, Alpha,” Avery agreed, his brows fused.

“Well, I believe my child’s luna ceremony is quite serious.”

Kendra needed a moment to internalize his words. “What?”

A smile spread on her father’s face. “I would like to start planning your luna ceremony.”

“But that’s a long way’s off.”

“Kendra, you’re ready and we both know it.”

“I don’t feel ready–at all!”

“If we wait too long people will ask questions. They’ll think I don’t trust you enough to take over and you are old enough to do so.”

“But it’s only been a few weeks.”

“Yes, and your luna ceremony won’t be for another few months. We’ll just plan ahead because it’s a big event, not just for you but your pack too.”

“I’m not sure about this, Father.”

“I am and I’m sure Avery is ready to replace my old rusty self with fresh blood too.”

“I wouldn’t use the word rusty,” Avery joked.

“B-but…” Kendra stammered.

“There is nothing to be afraid of, Kendra. Even after you’ve taken the title, I’ll be by your side. I won’t just drop you and spend the rest of my life vacationing on the beach.”

“But why so soon?”

“Because I can see that you are ready.”
