“When will the whole ordeal be done?” Vel asked, iciness creeping back into her tone.

“We’ll gather and eat first, then at the end we’ll send you on your way.”

“Fantastic. I’m dying for it to finally happen,” she deadpanned. She then kneeled down before Rayline, her face lightening up once more. “Do you think your dad will let me kidnap you one last time?”

Rayline didn’t bat an eye before she let go of her father and wrapped her arms around Vel’s neck.

“Good girl,” Vel praised, taking the baby in her arms and walking away.

“And here I thought at least one woman would have my back.”

Vel stretched out her middle finger behind her back so Rayline wouldn’t see.

“I’m still your beta!”

Vel only wiggled the finger: Try me.

Beta Wayne laughed out loud, his chest rumbling in amusement. “Why don’t I show you to your table?” He gestured for them to follow. “We aren’t very formal at these events because we usually don’t send a luna on her way. Although, Vel would likely rip us apart if we tried to make a fuss.”

“I can see that happening,” Asher admitted. Though he would never say it out loud, he liked Beta Wayne even more by the minute.

“Just a fair warning, there will be a lot of drinking. Things may get a little more… relaxed.”

“We’re looking forward to it,” Isaiah reassured. Deep down, he hoped that Vel would join the drinking.

An hour later they sat at a table with Vel, Alpha Heath, the beta, his mate, and their children. Vel sat next to Isaiah, eating and chatting with Curtis, who was clearly disappointed to see her go. He’d insisted on sitting next to her and was now making her promise she would be there for his first shift.

“Dad will know when it’s time, so you’ll be here, right?”

“I’ll make sure of it,” Isaiah promised.

“Thank you, Alpha…”

“Isaiah.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No need to be sorry,” Isaiah chuckled.

“Can you tell them apart?” Mia asked Vel from her father’s lap.

“I can.” Vel leaned forward and crooked her finger for Mia to get closer. “One of them is a perfectionist and the other is a troublemaker. Now look at their plates and tell me who is who.”

All eyes, including his own, fell on the plate before him and then on his brother’s. His plate was a mess: the sauce he hadn’t liked swept to the side and scattered with the remnants of his chicken wings. Isaiah’s plate, however, was clean. He’d stacked the bones to one side and crossed his cutlery over the top to signal they were no longer needed.

Asher leaned towards Mia as well, whispering with a gentle laugh. “I believe our new luna has trouble keeping secrets.”

“That’s alright,” Mia quickly defended. “I do too, so Curtis doesn’t tell me anything I’m not allowed to say out loud.”

Mia started babbling along again, while Vel leaned back and looked to where Rayan quickly approached. “You look like a man who’s about to lose a ton of money.”

“Then get your ass up and come with me.”

Asher had to hold back a growl, hating how Rayan spoke to her.

Though Vel wasn’t fazed. “And why is that?”

“Because I’m splitting the winnings with you.”
