“I’m sorry,” Ash apologised, combing his fingers through her hair. “I just want you to be happy and I wish things were different.”

“I was happy.” She didn’t open her eyes, nor did she pull away from Ash’s touch.

“But we’re your mates. His heart was still with his luna just like ours is with you.”

“He never lied about his intentions—those were clear from the start.”

“We know we messed up. I wish we could start over but we’re here now. And we want nothing more than to see you thrive.”

“It’s not that easy.”

“I know, but we want nothing but the best for you.”

“A little paradox, don’t you think? You’re taking me far away from the only place I ever felt truly safe.”

Ash sighed and began to braid the ends of her hair. “Maybe if we prove ourselves enough, we can be that safe place for you.”

“Not every dream becomes reality.”

“I hope this one will.”

“A crushed spirit hurts more than any broken bone.” She then knocked Ash’s hand away, running her fingers through her hair to undo the braid.

The next morning, they had a silent breakfast before heading back to the SUV. When Ash held the passenger door open for her, she simply shook her head and walked around to the driver’s side. Throwing her bag in the back, she climbed in and adjusted the seat.

Neither of them protested. Ash took the passenger’s seat, and Isaiah took the one behind him. That way he was able to see her face.

For the most part, the ride was quiet. Vel only spoke up to periodically ask for directions. Shortly after lunchtime, they stopped at a small diner off the highway and the twins claimed a booth while Vel disappeared into the bathroom. Again, they each took a side, letting her choose who she sat next to.

“So,” she started when she returned and sat next to Ash. “Do I have to keep track or are you going to tell me when you’re no longer even?”

“What do you mean?” Ash asked.

“How much attention either of you gets. I’m sure if I only sit next to you, Isaiah will be upset at some point.”

“So that’s why you sat next to Ash instead of me?”

“I guess.”

“You don’t have to do that.” Ash voiced what Isaiah was thinking.

“Okay.”

This time, they ate silently. Ash knew better now than to try and rile her up. Afterwards, Vel strolled off to the gas station. Isaiah rushed after her when he realised he hadn’t given her any money.

“I never gave you money,” he explained as she looked at him. “I didn’t mean to do it on purpose.”

“I have some.”

“Well it won’t last forever.”

“True.” She then grabbed a bag of candy and thrust it into his chest.

He followed her, freezing when she stopped in front of the condoms. He fought the urge to squirm as desire tugged at his lower belly.

“Gotcha,” she said with a dirty laugh as she snatched a pack of period pads from the shelf.

Though he felt like an idiot, Isaiah was thrilled that she enjoyed teasing him. “I like this side of you.”
