But the illusion slowly faded, knowing he would only send her back to be the Crystal Luna. He was alpha through and through and if a pack’s luna stood at his doors, he would ensure that she returned to where she belonged.
She whipped her head around when she heard footsteps behind her, seeing Asher approach. He was hesitant and kept his distance, likely expecting to be pushed away again.
“I want to help you, but I know you don’t want it.” He held his phone out to her. “Call him.”
She simply stared at him, surprised.
“It’s alright,” he repeated from before, brushing a lock of hair behind her ear. “You need someone to talk to right now and it’s okay that it can’t be us.”
Without another word, he returned to the truck.
Velora stared down at the phone for a while, but instead of calling Heath, she dialled Wayne’s number. Rayan crossed her mind, but she knew he wouldn’t give her any sound advice—he’d only offer to meet her halfway.
“This is Wayne.”
“Hi,” she returned, a slight quiver to her voice.
“You arrived already?”
“Not yet.”
There was a small pause before his concern flooded his voice. “What happened?”
“We’re close, but…it just feels so wrong.”
“Are you still with them?”
“Yes. I just needed someone to talk to.”
“Do you want me to find Heath or Rayan?”
“No. I can’t trust Rayan not to encourage me into running.”
Wayne gently laughed. “That sounds like Rayan.” He didn’t push her further on Heath and instead told her, “I know it might not be what you want to hear, but you are doing the right thing.”
“It doesn’t feel like it.”
“You have to dig through a ton of dirt to find gold.”
“Is the gold worth all the blood, sweat and tears?”
“It is, Luna Velora. Diamonds crystallise under pressure, and you have barely begun to form.”
“I hate diamonds.”
He laughed again. “Let’s hope your mates figure that out before dropping a fortune.”
“I’m pretty sure they’re taking notes as we speak.”
“Have they been good to you?”
“Yes,” she grumbled. They had, but she wasn’t happy about it.
“See? All you have to do now is get to know them. Get to know them as your mates. Remember it is different now. You are different.”
“It’s not just them.”
“Let me tell you a little secret. You’re luna now and someone special told me you’re more than capable of defending yourself.”
