“Is this permission to start a fight, Beta Wayne?”

“You don’t need my permission and if I remember correctly, you never cared if you had it in the first place.”

That brought a smile to her face. “You weren’t always around to give it.”

“I’m proud of you. We all are, Velora.”

Velora groaned. “You can’t say things like that or I’ll cry. I called you to cheer me up.”

Another joyful laugh warmed her heart through the speaker.

“Don’t tell Rayan I called. I don’t want him to worry. I’ll call him once I get settled.”

“Of course.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re always welcome.”

The call ended, and Velora took a deep breath. She exhaled slowly, pressing the air past her closed lips. After two more deep breaths, she climbed into the back of the SUV and returned Asher’s phone. “Thank you.”

“Feeling better?” he asked softly.

“Yes.”

“We’re all meeting up just outside of Swiftport,” Isaiah explained. “It’s about forty-five minutes from here. We’ll grab some food on the go but won’t stop in Swiftport itself.”

“Okay.”

Just as Isaiah said, they pulled up to a gas station just off the highway. Isaiah parked next to a black jeep where a group of warriors waited for them off to the side.

Her heart pounded as she jumped out and stretched, taking in the group before her. Her stomach knotted, acidic bile creeping up her oesophagus when she saw him standing just a few feet away from her.

Wrists slammed on granite.

‘I’m doing you a favour.’

Scalp burning as he pulled her hair.

‘Hush, now. We don’t want anyone interrupting this special moment for you, do we?’

Salty slime filling her mouth.

“Vel.” Asher’s voice caught her attention. “We still have some time if you need a break or some food.”

Instead of doing either, she beelined towards the bathrooms. She didn’t have time to lock the door before falling to her knees and heaving into the toilet. Bile burned but she couldn’t second guess it before another wave swept over her.

“Vel!” Asher knocked on the door, but a third spew of bile silenced her.

The door opened and both twins shoved themselves into the tiny space. Isaiah fell to his knees beside her, holding her hair back and handing her a paper towel.

“We’re here.”

“Wonderful,” she mumbled as she wiped her mouth and leaned back on her heels.

Unfortunately, Asher was right behind her, and she had no choice but to rest against his chest. He wrapped one arm around her and handed her an opened bottle of water with the other.

“Here. Rinse.”
