“Well, there’s no need for that. You’ll do amazing no matter what.”
She sighed and leaned her weight into him, watching Asher with a smile as he tried to mop himself up. “If you say so.”
“We do,” they both insisted.
“How about we curl up on the couch with some snacks and a movie before Ash and I have to head out?”
She agreed and they split up their duties, grabbing enough snacks and blankets so no one had to move for at least a couple hours.
When it was time for the twins to leave, Velora stood on the patio and watched Isaiah and Asher check the bags they’d packed with food, drinks and weapons. Before they both stripped, they came to her and pulled her into a hug.
“Be safe, moonlight.
“If there is trouble, let others help you, little luna.”
She wrapped an arm around each man as they pressed a kiss to the top of her head. Before she let them go, she looked up and couldn’t help but feel worried that she wouldn’t see them again.
“We’ll be fine,” Isaiah reassured, kissing her cheek.
Asher did the same, but Velora just couldn’t let them go without kissing them herself. She stood on her toes, giving Asher a quick, passionate kiss before turning and giving the same to Isaiah.
Identical blushes and smiles crept up on their faces. “We love you,” they said in unison.
Velora’s voice turned to a growl. “And you know what’ll happen if you two don’t return.”
“Yes, Luna,” they both retorted but not without their grin fading.
They stripped and shifted while she added their clothes to the bags just in case. She handed a bag to each wolf, which they carefully took between their canines.
“Don’t be stupid or cocky, you’re not as good as you think,” she called after them, making their tails wag as they disappeared in the forest.
Restless, Velora made her way to the gym. She had an idea, and it wasn’t a workout. She stepped into the weapons room, looking around the unfamiliar space for what she needed.
When she gave up and reached for Axel’s mind, he opened straight away. ‘Yes, Luna?’
‘Do we have anything that’s pure silver? Bullets or something?’
He was clearly confused, but revealed a box hidden beneath one of the shelves. ‘Gloves should be there too.’
‘Thank you.’
‘You’re welcome, Luna.’
A few moments later she was loading a Glock with the silver bullets she’d found. They seemed to have been collected many years ago, perhaps during a fight with a hunter. The box had also hidden silver chains within it, which made her heart leap. With all the families around, she didn’t want a huge encounter. She hoped a cleaner approach would be best.
With the gun holstered to her side, she walked out into the cool air. She could feel the pack’s anxiety. Many more lights were on than usual, the occupants of the houses unable to settle. The rogues would cross the borders at any minute now, but it would take them a while to get deep enough into the territory where her warriors were waiting for them.
“Luna?” a voice called from behind her.
She turned and saw Mitchel, one of the warriors who’d stayed behind with her.
“Are you alright?”
She smiled at him, his worry so genuine that it warmed her heart. “I’m just not sure what to do with myself. I hate waiting.”
He stepped closer, his brown eyes resting on her and his lips forming a smile hidden in his beard. “We all feel the same. Those of us that aren’t on post are hiding out at Luka’s if you’d like to join.”
“Are you sure?”
